WTED TATE PATENT FFIE STANLEY W. HAYES, OF RIGHMOND, INDIANA.
DERAIL.
Application filed December 1, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STANLEY W. HAYES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Wayne and State of Indiana, have invented the following described new and useful Improvements in Derails.
The invention relates to derails and constitutes an improvement in the means provided on the derailing member for its attachment to the operating and other connections, the inventions object being to adapt the derail, by simple construction, for efficient coordination with several connecting devices whereby it may be locked and safeguarded in an interlocking system, and whereby said various connections can be compactly disposed on the narrow end of the derailing member, without enlargement of the latter and without unduly depressing any of the connections below the tops of the ties, or interfering with their separate connection bolts, all as hereinafter fully explained.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a derail in closed condition, showing the connection lugs at the rear end;
Fig. 2 is a rear elevation partly broken away and partly in section;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary section on the section line indicated in Fig. 2;
Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation on a smaller scale showing the derail open and illustrating the mutual relationship of the connections hereby provided; and
Fig. 5 is a plan of the same parts, with portions in section.
The invention comprises an arrangement of integral attachment lugs on the movable derailing member, whereby various combinations of connections can be made with facility, the forces of greater magnitude being centralized to and through the said moving member and balanced so as to overcome or reduce any lateral or tilting component therein, and to that extent promote the ease and smoothness with which the member may move on its bearings or guides, and whereby, also, the lugs are readily accessible in either the open or closed condition. The general type of derail, as also many of the specific features of construction shown, are not new in this appl cation and do not require extended descriptlon.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Serial No. 64,416.
Patented Aug. 7, 1917.
The base 1 comprises side flanges 2 intended to be spiked to adjacent ties, and depending flanges 3 to bear against the inner faces of the same, and is further formed with upstanding side wall portions 4: connected by an arched roof 5 at the rear of the base. WVithin the housing thus afforded the body 6 of the derailing member is mounted for transverse up and over movement relative to the rail, for the purpose of seating the derail block 7 thereon and re moving it therefrom to depressed position alongside of the rail. The means for guiding the movable member in this movement are shown herein as comprising downward shoulder projections 8 on the front part of the member in cooperation with upwardly curved bearing ledges 9 on the base, and side ribs 10 on the rear portion of the body in sliding relation between rounded bearings 11 at the rear of the base beneath the roof 5, but so far as this invention is concerned various other means of. prescribing the movement of the derail block may be resorted to with equal effect.
The body of the derail member comprises a hollow casting having side walls 12 (on which the ribs 10 are formed) these wall portions being extended downward at the rear end of the member to form a pair of opposite, laterally spaced attaching lugs 13 and 1 1, each having an eye to which a connection jaw may be pinned in the usual way. Between these lugs the derailing member is provided with a short integral rib, depending therefrom in a central, longitudinal and vertical plane and braced by a cross web 16, which connects and also braces the side lugs 13 and 14;. The said middle rib member is prolonged at its lower corners and fashioned into two lugs 17 and 18, the latter being extended obliquely from the cross web 16 in fore and aft positions and respectively at opposite sides of the transverse center line of the side lugs 13 and 14: and also at a somewhat greater elevation than these lugs as shown more clearly in Fig. 3.
The fore and aft lugs 17 and 18 because of their central position and their closer proximity to the line of the bearings of the derailing member are specially suited for the attachment of operating connections, such as the pipe line for operating the derail and another line leading from it to operate a second derail or a target stand or both. The two lateral lugs are appropriate for the connection of interlocking locking members, and neither lug of either set, by reason of their relative arrangement, obstructs access to the others, or interferes with the vertical movement of the derail as it moves from one position to the other.
In the particular illustrative application of the invention shown in Figs. l and 5, 19 is the operating p'ipe line connection, the same being pinned by its jaw to the rear lug 18, and 20 is a rod extending from the forward lug 17 to a bell-crank 21, which in turnis connected by a link 22 with a targetstand 23. Of the lateral lugs, one is shown connected by its jaw with the slide bar 24: which cooperates with the plunger 25 of a facing point lock, while the other moves a rod 26 extending to a wire bolt lock 27. The nature and uses of these locks are well understood in the art as applied to switches generally. Briefly stated, the facing point lock locks the derail in closed or open position, being operated from the signal tower or in connection with some other element of the system; the wire bolt lock operates to look a signal operated from the tower to danger when the derail is open, and to lock the derail when the latter has been properly closed and the signal set to clear; both are dependent upon the proper condition of the derail as determined by the operating connection 19.
What I claim as new is:
1. A derail comprising a base, and a de-- railing member mounted for upward and over motion toward the rail and having a hollow transversely arched body, said body being formed in its rear portion which projects from the base in the closed position of of the body at its rear end, lying substantially in the central longitudinal plane and cross-braced by an integral transverse rib to the sides of the body.
3. A derail comprising a base and a derailing member having up and over movement toward the rail and provided with two connection lugs in fore and aft positions thereon, and a connection lug at either side thereof. r
a. A derail comprising a base and a derailing member having up and over movement toward the rail and provided with two lateral side wall portions constituting side connection lugs and two intermediate portions formed as fore and aft connection lugs respectively.
5-. Ina derail, a derailing member formed on its under portion with a combination of connection lugs, comprising lugs spaced at opposite sides of the longitudinal center and central lugs disposed in fore and aft relation between said side lugs.
6. In a derail the combination with the derailing member of a pair 'of integral side connection lugs and intermediate connection lugs also formed integrally with the member and spaced foreand aft and respectively at opposite sides of the transverse center line of the lateral lugs.
7. A derailing member having side wall 'portionsand lateral connection lugs extended downward from said wall portions, in
combination with twocentral integral connection lugs disposed fore and aft and at a higher elevation than said lateral lugs.
8. A derailing member having side wall portions with lateral connection lugs formed thereon, a transverse rib connecting said lugs, and central fore and aft lugs united with said transverse rib.
In testimony whereof, I have signed this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
STANLEY, w. HAYES.
