Description

L. L. MOE.
HAY PRESS.
(No Model.)
Patented Dec. 3, 1889.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LEONIDAS L. MOE, or DENVER, COLORADO.
'HAY-PRESS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent mi. 416,416, dated December 3, 1889.
Application filed April 3, 1889. seiiii a). 305,831. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEONIDAS L. MOE, of Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented a new and Improved Hay-Press, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to presses of the class employed in the baling of hay and cotton, the object of the invention being to provide for two or more reciprocations of the follower for each revolution of the sweep; and to the end named the invention consists, essentially,'of a follower, a stem arranged in connection therewith, a cam carried by the stem, a sweep, a head carried thereby, and
rolls or proj eotions carried by the sweep-head and arranged to bear against the stem-cam, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of a press embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same, the view being taken on lineac w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan view of a modified construction for returning the stem, and'Fig. 4 is a similar View of another modified construction for returning the stem. In the drawings, 10 represents a follower, which, as usual, is mounted within a balingchamber 11. This follower is connected to a stem 12, which carries a cam-faced head 13. Beyond the stem I mount a head 15, to which the sweep 16 is rigidly connected, the head 15 being supported by a central shaft 14. In the construction shown in the drawings the head 15 is represented as being a simple disk; but I desire it to be distinctly understood that any proper head could be employed. The head 15 carries two or more anti-friction rolls 18, which as the sweep is drawn forward are brought to bear against the cam-head 13 of the stem 12, the arrangement being such that the stem and follower will be forced forward in the direction of the arrow shown in Fig. 2, and in order that the stem maybe returned after any particular one of the antifriction rolls has passed from engagement with the cam I arrange a spring 20, as shown in Fig. 2. i
In the specific construct-ion illustrated in the drawings I have represented the head 15 as being provided with three anti-friction rolls; but in practice I could employ any desired number of rolls, as will be readily understood;
Although I prefer to employ a spring 20 for the purpose of returning the stem 12, still the Stem might be returned by such anattachment as that shown in Fig. 3, wherein I have represented the cam-head13 as carrying'a frame 21, to which is secured a second cam 22, placed in opposition to the cam-head 13, the parts being so timed that just after a roll has passed from engagement with the -camhead 13 the cam 22 will be borne upon and the stem 12 will be moved outward.
In Fig. 4 I represent the stem 12 as being provided with a hook 24, which extends beneath the head 15, there to engage the antifriction rolls 18, the hook being connected to the stem by a link 23, and arranged so that after an anti-friction roll has passed beyond the cam-head 13.the hook will be engaged thereby and the stem carried outward.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as newand desire to secure by Letters Patent In a baling-press, the combination, with a follower having a rigid stem provided with a cam-faced head, of a sweep-head provided with projections for engaging the cam-faced head of the follower-stem, a sweep secured to the head for rotating it, a frame secured to the follower-stem, and a cam secured to the said frame and engaging the projections of the head to retract the follower, substantially as described.
