DUPLEX FORCE-PUMP.

Be it known that 1, WILLIAM H. GROVE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Circleville,in the county of Pickaway and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Duplex Force-Pumps, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to pumping mechanism, and the purpose thereof is to provide a novel and simple double-actingsubmerged force-pump capable of being manufactured at a comparatively low cost, adapted to deliver a continuous stream or supply of Water Without any material interruption, and so organized that the alternating actionof the duplex piston is controlled by a single duplex valve so located that it is readily accessible for repairs or other purposes.
It is a further purpose of my invention to simplify and improve the construction of pumps of this class in such manner that a durable and eflicient duplex pump may be adjacent to the cylinders and connected therewith above and below the diaphragm, whereby a substantially-continuous stream of water is produced without material interruption.
The invention consists in the several novel features of construction and new combinations of parts hereinafter fully set forth, and then definitely pointed out in the claims following this specification.
To enable others skilled in the art to practice my said invention, I will describe the same in detail, reference being had to the drawings forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section showing the complete apparatus. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the pump submerged in position for operation. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the casting, the cylinders and duplex valve being removed. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the duplex valve removed from the casting. Fig. 5 is a section upon the line 00 at, Fig. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective of one of the pistons with its valves.
In the said drawings, the reference-1mmeral 1 denotes a base-plate of suitable size and thickness, having a lug or projection 2, into which is tapped the end of the standard 3, supporting the pump, said standard belng composed, preferably, of a section of tubing of suitable size and strength-such, for example, as that forming the main pipeleading from the pump. Upon the upper threaded end of this standard is mounted a casting 4, formed in a single piece and comprising a valve-chamber 5, having a surrounding collar or flange 6, provided with a female thread. \Vithin this chamber is formed a valve-seat 7, surrounding an opening 8, which is divided by a central wall or diaphragm 9 into two parts or passages 10 and 12. Upon one side of the valve-chamber is formed a cylindrical section 13, divided by a central integral diaphragm 14. rected laterally and opens above this diaphragm into the cylindrical chamber in closed by the section 1.3, while the other passage 12 is carried downward and then laterally, opening into a similar chamber, below the diaphragm 14-.
Within the valve-chamber 5 is placed a duplex valve consisting of a disk of leather, rubber, or any other suitable material centrally slitted from one edge nearly to the other, whereby the disk is divided into two substantially-equal parts 15 and 16, their curved edges'lying upon the valve-seat 7, and their straight edges, formed by the central slit 17, resting upon the central wall or diaphragm. These semicircular parts are loaded by weights 18, and the valve is attached by screws or pins 19, passing into the seat 7. The valve-chamber is surmounted by a reducer 20, to which the main pipe 21 is connected.
The duplex cylinder is formed of two similar sections of drawn metal tubing 22, threaded on their ends and turned into the female threads of the cylindrical section 13. Passing centrally through the diaphragm 9 The passage 10 is diof the section 8 is a plunger or piston-rod 23, having a reduced lower portion, on the upper part of which is formed a thread 24, with which a collar 25 engages, forming part of a circular casting 26. The collar is connected with the casting by a central arm or crosshead 25, and a packing-ring 26, of any suitable construct-ion, surrounds the casting and fits within the cylinder. A valve 27, consisting, preferably, of a disk of leather or other suitable material, is secured upon the casting by one or more rivets, screws, or pins 28, passing into a web on the casting. A similar piston, resembling the one described in all substantial particulars save that it is inverted, is secured upon the lower end of the plunger or rod 23 and lies in the other cylinder below the diaphragm 9. By
this inversion the valves in these pistons open and close alternately, each valve closing as the piston moves toward the central diaphragm 9 and opening as it recedes therefrom. The plunger or pump-rod 23 is continued upward and connected to a lever or other operating device of any preferred form.
The operation is as follows: The rod or plunger being actuated to reciprocate the pistons in the duplex submerged cylinder, the downward movement causes the valve of the lower piston to open, admitting-water to the lower cylinder. At the same instant the weight of water in the main pipe-reducer, together with the suction produced by the action of the piston, closes that section 16 of the duplex valve which seats over the opening 12, which leads to the lower cylinder. At the same moment the valve of the upper piston closes by its downward movement and forces the water in the upper cylinder through the passage 10, opening the section 15 of the duplex valve and permitting the water to pass upward in the main pipe. Upon the reversal of the stroke the action of the parts is reversed, the upper cylinder filling while the lower is being emptied. A weight 29 may be mounted on the piston-rod or plunger, if desired, to facilitate its downward movement.
It will be understood that while the construction of the valves shown and described is that preferred I may substitute other forms without departing from my invention. For example, a puppet-valve might be used upon each piston in place of the clack-valve shown, and the duplex valve used in the valve-chamber 7 may also be varied, if desired.
By this invention I am able to produce a durable and excellent pump at a low price, since I wholly avoid the necessity of coring or turning out the cylinders by employing drawn metal tubing in their construction, which is simply cut off to the proper length and threaded. I require only a single casting, which is simple in construction, and all the parts are connected by simply threading and screwing them together. Moreover, the valve mechanism is wholly removed from the cylinders, save only the valves upon the pistons, and placed in a lateral chamber, where it is readily accessible.
By using the rigid diaphragm between the cylinders in connection with the construction shown I obtain a practically-continuous flow of water, since the forcing action of the pistons begins simultaneously with the reversal of the stroke.
\Vhat I claim is 1. A duplex force-pump consisting of a casting having a cylindrical section divided by a rigid diaphragm, similar sections of tubing tapped into said section, a rod or plunger carrying pistons lying on opposite sides of said diaphragm and having oppositely-acting valves, a valve-chamber arranged beside the cylindrical section and divided by a central wall into two passages, one opening below and the other above said diaphragm, and a duplex valve covering said opening, substantially as described.
2. In a submerged duplex force-pump, the combination, with a cylinder centrally divided by a rigid diaphragm, of a valve-oasing arranged beside said cylinder and provided with a centrally-divided opening forming two passages opening into the cylinder on opposite sides of the rigiddiaphragm, a
duplex valve consisting of a centrally-slitted disk seating over said divided opening, and a plunger or rod passing through the rigid diaphragm and carrying pistons arranged on opposite sides thereof and having oppositelyoperatingvalves, substantially as described.
3. In a submerged duplex force-pump, the combination,with a duplex cylinder composed of similar sections of drawn metal tubing tapped into a casting having a dividing-diaphragm, of a piston-rod passing through said diaphragm, pistons screwed on said rod 011 opposite sides of the diaphragm,each having a clack-valve arranged oppositely to the others, a valve-chamber forming part of the casting and provided with an opening divided into two passages entering the cy1in-.
der on opposite sides of the dividing-diaphragm, a duplex valve composed of a centrally-slitted disk attached to the valve-seat and closing said passages, a reducer surmounting the valve-chamber, a main pipe, and a supporting-standard consisting of a piece of pipe tapped into a base-plate and into the casting, substantially as described.
