DEVICE FOR SUPPORTING ARTICLES IN SHOW-WINDOWS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,912, dated November 26, 1889'. Application filed January 31, 1889- Serial No. 298,193. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that we, JAMES P. KERR and WALTER M. HODGE, both. of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Devices for Supporting Articles in ShowlVindows, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This device consists, briefly, of an arm made to clasp a rod and having on one side of the rod a means forsuspending an article for exhibition, and on the other side of the rod it preferably has a counterbalance-weight.
Figure I is a perspective View showing two of the devices of suitable form to support a shirt-collar and similar articles. Fig. II is a side elevation of one of the devices. Fig. III is an enlarged section at III III, Fig. II. Fig. IV is a perspective View showing the device in a somewhat-modified form.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents a rod, which is shown in a horizontal position, and tubular. Such rods as these are in common use in show-windows, being in some cases fixed and at other times supported 011 The rods are usually tubular, as shown.
Each arm or device to which our invention relates has a hook or hooks 2, made usually with sharp upturnedpoints 3, suitable to engage any article, or aportion of it, as seen in Fig. I, or by sticking into the article, as seen in Fig. IV. Back of the hook or hooks the arm has one or more curved parts 5, embracing the rod 1. These parts are preferably formed to extend at least half-way around the rod, and the curves made of smaller radius than the rod, so that they will take a spring-grip on the rod, not only preventing the accidental dislodgment of the arm, but also resisting its turning upon the rod.
6 represents a rearward extension or the arm proper, upon which is a sliding counterbalance-weight 7, which may be put in a position to approximately counterbalance the article, so that the frictional hold of the clip upon the rod, combined with the counterbalance '7, shall hold the article in whatever position it may be placed.
The holder is shown as made of a single piece of wire with a'counterbalance of globular form slotted upon the sides to receive the two parallel parts of the projection 6. The wires are simply twisted together at S, which forms a suificientbond between the sides. WVe do not limit ourselves, however, to the described construction, as it may obviously be varied without departing from the principles of the invention.
In some instances the weight might be dispensed with, and the friction between the springs 5 and the rod be depended on to support the article, when the portion 6 would still be useful as a handle for adjusting the device on the rod.
\Ve claim as our invention 1. The combination, wit-h a supporting-rod having an arm fitting thereon and provided on one side of the rod with means for engagement with an article to be exhibited, of a counterbalance-weight carried by the arm on the other side of the rod, substantially as described.
2. A device for holding show articles, 0011- sisting of an arm adapted to fita supportingrod, and having hooks on one side of the rod and an adjustable weight on the other side, substantially as set forth.
3. A device for holding show articles, consisting of an extension 6, having sliding weight 7 thereon, spring portion 5, for engagement with a supporting-rod,and hooks 3, for engaging an article to be exhibited, as set forth.
at. In a device forholdingshow articles, the combination of a single wire bent so as to form hooks 3, spring portion 5, twisted portion 8, and extension or loop 6 with a counterbalance-weight 7, sliding in loop 6, as set forth.
