Description

(No Model.) 1 1 v P. L. DERMIGNY.
COOLER.
No. 415,901. Patented Nov. 26, 1889.
WITNESSES:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PAUL L. DERMIGNY, OF NElV YORK, N. Y.
COOLER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,901, dated November 26, 1889. Application filed April 24, 1889. Serial No. 308,442- (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, PAUL L. DERMIGNY, a citizen of France, at present residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have in vented anew and Improved Cooler, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement in that particular class of freezers which are composed of the following parts: first, an outer receptacle and an inner one rigidly connected at the top and separated by "a narrow space, wherein the liquid (say water) is placed to be frozen; second, a rotary device located in the said inner receptacle, and whose function is to agitate the freezing-mixture contained in the same receptacle.
My improvements are embodied in the construction of the agitator for the freezingmixture and the means for securing bottles, due, on said agitator; also, in the construction of the shaft that rotates the latter, as hereinafter described.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of the improvement on the line as a of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is a sectional plan View of the same on the line 3 y of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of a modified form of the device for transmitting motion to the agitator.
The improved cooler is provided with, an outer receptacle A, preferably mounted on suitable legs and provided on top with a cover B. In the receptacle A is placed a second receptacle D, so as to form a space between it and the outer receptacle A for the reception of the water to be cooled. The water can be drawn off from the lower end of the receptacle A by means of a faucet C. The upper end of the inner receptacle D is provided with an outwardly-extending flange D, fitting on the top edge of the outer receptacle A, so as to form a cover over the waterspace. An aperture is formed in this annular flange D, said aperture being provided with a stopper D and it serves for the introduction of water into the water-space. From the bottom of the inner receptacle D leads an outlet-pipe E, passing through the bottom of the outer receptacle A and closed at its outer end by a suitable cap E. In the inner receptacle D is placed asuitable freezingmiXture, which can be run out of the said receptacle after use by .removing the cap E of the pipe E. The inner vesselD is charged with the freezing-mixture by removing the cover B of the outer receptacle A.
A spindle F projects from the center of the bottom of the inner receptacle D, and an agitator G, consisting of ahorizontal platform or disk G and upright arms II, is mounted and adapted to turn thereon, as shown. At
points between the center of said disk G and arms H are located other, but preferably longer, arms H, which also stand vertically, and whose function is to support and hold in place on the disk G a champagne or other bottle I, which may be placed thereon to be cooled. The said agitator G is rotated by means of shaft 0, whose lower portion is bifurcated and forms the parallel vertical rods L L. A balance-wheel P, having a crankhandle P, is attached to the part of the said shaft that projects through the cover B of receptacle A, and the said rods L are suitably connected with the disk G.
Instead of the hand-wheel P, I may secure on the shaft 0 a bevel gear-wheel O, meshing into a bevel gear-wheel O fastened on a shaft 0 extending horizontally and mounted to turn in suitable hearings on the top of the cover B, as illustrated in Fig. 3. On the outer end of the shaft 0 is held a' crank-arm 0 for conveniently turning the said shaft 0 in order to rotate the shaft 0 and the agitator G in the receptacle D.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen the cover B and the stopper D? are removed, the vessel A can be charged with water, which surrounds the inner receptacle D. The latter is charged with a freezing-mixture, after which the cover B and the shaft 0 L and combined agitator and bottle-supporter G G H are again placed in the position shown in Fig. 1. When the operator now imparts a rotary motion to the shaft 0, the agitator G is turned, whereby the freezing-mixture is agitated and the water surrounding the receptacle D is cooled. The water can be drawn off through the faucet C for immediate use. The bottle or vessel I, held in the agitator, is also cooled by direct contact with the freezing-mixture, and by long exposure in the said freezing-mixture the contents of the bottle or vessel I or Q may be frozen. Thus it will be seen that a very convenient device is provided for quickly cooling water or other liquid, or freezing the same, if desired.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an apparatus for cooling liquids, &c., the combination, with a fixed outer receptacle A and inner receptacle D, having a spindle F projecting; from its bottom, of the rotating agitator contained in said inner receptacle and consisting of a platform or disk having vertical arms, and the shaft 0, which is journaled in the cover of the outer receptacle and connected with the said disk, as shown and described.
2. In an apparatus for cooling liquids, &c., the combination, with the inner receptacle D, of the agitator mounted on a spindle within said receptacle and composed of the horizontal disk G and vertical arms G, the set of inner vertical arms H, for supporting a bottle or other removable vessel on the disk, and a bifurcated shaft 0, whose arms L L extend down to and connect with said disk, all as shown and described.
In an apparatus for cocling liquids, &c., the combination, with the inner receptacle D,
of the agitator mounted on the spindle within said receptacle and composed of the horizontal disk G and vertical arms G, the set of inner vertical arms H, for supporting a bottle or other removable vessel 011 the disk, and a bifurcated shaft 0, Whose arms L L extend down to and connect the said disk, and the vertically-adjustable cap K, adapted to slide on said rods, as and for the purpose specified.
PAUL L. DERMIGNY.
