To allfwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Mnnnrrr P. GANGE- WERE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Easton, in the county of Northampton and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements yin Dish-Washing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to dish washing machines of that type in which a dish receiving receptacle' is adapted to be oscillated Within a receptacle for the cleansing fluid in such manner thataoitation of the fluid will thoroughly clean the dishes.
As a principal object it is contemplated by this invention to provide a tank or vessel fitted with a removable cover and adapted -to contain' therewthin an oscllatable inner receptacle for receiving the dishes and to provide'jnieans for oscillating the inner receptacle in order to expose the dishes to the subsequent churning of a cleansing Huid with which the outer tank may be filled.
It is a more specific object of this invention to provide a dish receptacle to be {itted with adjustable partitions between which the dishes to be cleanedv may be placed in obviating any possibility of breakage when receptacle is in motion.
It is also an object of this invention to provide a dish washing machine with which there may-be readily employed electric motor means for the operation thereof, or to also fit the device for manual operation.
The above and additional objectsV which will become apparent as this explanatory description proceeds, are accomplished by such means as are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more particularly pointed out in the claims which are appended heretopand form a part ot'this application. y With reference to the drawings, wherein there is illustrated the preferred embodiment. of this-invention as itI is reduced to practice, and throughout the views of which like characters of reference designate-simi "lar parts: l Figure. l is a side elevation of the assembled dish Washing machine of this inven- 'tion Fig. 2 matter;

Fig. 5 is a connections chine. n It is desirable to mount the machine and lts operating adjuncts as au entirety and t0 this end there is employed a base 10. Upon suitable legs 11, supported by this base. is mounted the main tank 12 of the machine, such tank including a preferably cylindrical body portion which may be formed from a. suitable plated sheet metal, a top 13 and a bottom l-i. The top and bottom are preferably cast, the latter in the shape shown in Fig. 3 which provides a slanting floor with a central boss 15 to serve as a bearingfor the detaill of the gearing and crank between the motor and the maoscillatable tank receptacle. A drainin outlet 16` the mouth of which is protecte by a perforate trap 17 extends through this bottom for a removal of the cleansing liquid with which the Vtank 12 is adapted to be filled. The top 13 is provided with spacedannular flanges 18-adapted to seat upon the cylindricalbody of the machine-fin order-to renderthe same Water tight and may be secured to the tank 12 through the medium of readily removable catches of any desired type, with the specific illustration of which the present invention need not be concerned. A handle 19 is provided for the cover in rendering the top 13 readily removable for the insertion or withdrawal of the dishes.
The inner receptacle for the dishes is also provided with a cast annular bottom 20 which is centrally formed with a bearing ball 2l adapt-ed to be suitably seated within the'hoss 15 in order to render the inner receptacle freely rotatable. Inlets 30 and 31 are provided for hot and cold water respectively, in order that the cleansing fluid may be bro vight to the heat desiredrby the operator.
Operating meansv to accomplish the desired oscillatory inotion of the inner receptacle include a beveled gear 32 carried upon a collar surrounding the reduced and prolonged extremity 33 of the central post 22. A. collar 34 is provided for-the gear collar ,n maint lining the latter properly upon the tink cover 13, suitable set screws removably si curing this ccllar in place. A U-shaped b1 acket 35 is aso carried by the cover 13 and rotatably supports therein a shaft 36 upon the inner extremity or' which is pro-- vided a large bevel gearf37 adapted to mesh with the operating gear 32 on the post of the inner receptacle.' Adjacent the opposite extremity of the shaft 36'there is mounted the crank arm 37n which is employed when an electric motor or other mechanical propulsion is desired. The extreme end 38 of the shaf- 36 perm-its the use of a crank when manual operation of the machine is desirable.
As here illustrated,l an electric motor designated as a whole bythe numeral 39 .is providedas secured to the vbase 10, its central shaft being equipped with a pinion 40 adapted 'ro nosh with the gear 4l carried on the same shaft 42 as a similar gear 43, such shaft brim mounted within a bracket 44 supported by ilu, base l0. This bracket is also' employed to `support a large gear 45 adapted to mesh with tbc gear 43, such large gear havingcccoutiically secured thereto as at 46 the crank 4arm 47 which makes suitterasse able removable connections 48 with the bi- 4furcated extremity of the crank 371.
By this arrangement rotation of the motor shaft imparts an oscillatory movement to the cover shaft 36 so that the dish receptacle Ais in turn. given partial rotations in opposite'directions, thereby accom,- ishing a much'more thorough agitation or churning of the cleansingfluid within -the tank 12 upon the dishes within the receptacle 20. When removing the cover 13 of the outer .tank for the purpose of insertingdishes to .be cleaned and removing the washed dishes,
the removable connections 48 are withdrawn from the arms 37a and 47 and such catches as may be employed upon the cover loosened. 1f' desired it is obvious that the cover 13 may be hinged in such manner that the weight of the operating mechanism carried thereby will tend to automatically open the same whenfthe connection 48 has been removed and the cover catches loosened, the
hinges, of course, being placed immediately adjacent the bracket 35.
While in the foregoing, however, there has thus been illustrated in the drawings and described in the specification such combination and arrangement of elements as constitute the preferredl embodiment of this invention, it is desired to emphasize the fact that such minor changes in the matters of.
proportion and degree may be made in later adaptations of this device as shall not alter the spirit of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
What is claimed is 1. A dish washing machine including a tank for holding water, a dish' receptacle rotatable in'said tank comprising a central post stepped at its lower end in the bottom of the tank and having a plurality ofarms radiating from the lower' end thereof, a reticulated bottom lfor the receptacle support ed on said arms, walls for the receptacle formed of reticulatod material secured to the bottom and having an inwardly flanged ring at the top, said inwardly directed flange having a series 'of notches formed therein, enlargements on the top and the bottom of the central shaft also formed with notches in line with the notches in the flange, and lradial partitions adapted to be secured in place by engaging said notches. i
