MACHINE FOR ENAMELING WATCH-DIALS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,737, dated November 26, 1889.

The present invention has relation to machines for enameling watch-dials; and it consists in the different parts and combination of parts hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawings, A represents the base or support, which may be substantially of the form shown in the drawings, and, if desired, this base may be securely attached to a work-bench or other object. The standard B is securely attached at its bottom or lower end to the base A by means of the key or wedge a or its equivalent.
To the standard B are securely attached the arms 0 and C, said arms in this instance being securely held in proper position by means of the screws h. The arm 0 is provided at its outer end or portion with the angular notch or groove 0 and the semicircular groove d, which notch and groove form a square and round aperture in said arm when the cap D is properly attached to the arm 0, said cap with a suitable bearing for the top or upper portion of the hollow shaft E. The bottom or lower end of said shaftEis properly seated in the round aperture formed by the semicircular grooves cZ, which aperture is located just above a square aperture. formed by the notches c.
To the top or upper end of the shaft E is removably attached the dial-plate-retaining disk F by meansof the screw or, which screw is located substantially as illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2. V
The periphery of the dial-plate-retaining disk F is provided with the ring or band H, and is for the purpose of gaging and regulating the thickness of enamel designed and calculated to be placed upon a watch-dial plate.
For the purpose of adjusting the ring or band I[ up or down upon the periphery of the disk F, so as to regulate and adj ustthe thickness of enamel, the slots 6 are provided, which slots receive the set-screws f, as illustrated in Fig. 1. For the purpose of causing a watch-dial plate to rotate with the disk F the apertures g are provided, which apertures receive and hold the rivets or posts of a watchdial plate.
The bottom or lower end of the stationary gage h is provided with the shank h, which shank conforms in size with the aperture formed by the notches or grooves c, and is placed in said aperture and is held at the desired point of adjustment by means of the set-screw I or its equivalent. The shank h is so adjusted as to bring the top or upper end of the guide or stationary gage h over or above the same plane as the top of the ring or band H, or, if desired,saidstationary gage may be so adjusted as to bring its top or upper end on the same plane as the top of the ring or band H, said gage being adjusted to correspond with the convexity of the watchdial plate designed and calculated to be enameled.

In use a watch-dial plate is placed upon the retaining-disk F and its rivets or posts entered into the top or upper portions of the apertures g, at which time rotary motion is communicated to the retaining-disk F and a watch-dial plate by means of the pulley M or its equivalent, when a sufficient amount of plastic enamel is placed upon the watch-dial plate and a knife or gage placed across and over the watch-dial plate and its disk, said knife or gage resting upon the top or upper end of the stationary gage h and the top or upper edge of the ring or band H. The rotary motion of the watch-dial plate is continued until a sufficient amount of enamel has been attached and distributed upon the dial-plate. It will be understood that the knife or other instrument used in distributing the plastic enamel should conform as to its convexity with the convexity of the watchdial plate.
In case it is desired to use a flat dial-plate,
the knife or other instrument used to distribute the plastic enamel should be straight.
For the purpose of steadying the hand of the operator and also steadying the knife or instrument used in distributing the plastic enamel upon watch-dial plates, the rest N is provided, which rest is attached in any convenient and well-known manner to the arm 0' or its equivalent.
When a watch-dial plate has been properly enameled, it is removed from the disk F by elevating the yoke J, which in turn elevates the spider L, thereby causing the pins 70 to push the dial-plate from the disk F, at which time the dial-plate is free to be removed together with its enamel. The yoke J is elevated by a downward pressure upon the handle 0, which handle is fulorumed at or near its center to the arm 0. For the purpose of causing the spider L to automatically assume the position shown in Fig. l the spring P is provided, which spring may be of the form shown or of any other desired formas, for instance, a helical spring may be used in place of the fiat spring shown.
It will be understood that the collar k slides up anddown upon the hollow shaft E, as it is operated by means of the handle 0. For the purpose of preventing the knife or distributing instrument from jumping or trembling while the enamel is being distributed upon a watch dial-plate the hook Z is provided, which extends a short distance above the top or upper end of the gage h, and is adapted to embrace and hold the knife or distributing-instrument down upon the top or upper end of the gage h.
It will be understood that different-sized disks F are to be used for different-sized watch-dial plates, and that the spider L is to correspond with the size of the disk used. It will also be understood that the number of apertures g is to correspond with the number of rivets or posts attached to the watch-dial plate designed to be enameled.
In the drawings the standard B is shown smaller in diameter than the diameter of the upper portion of the base A; but, if desired, the standard B may be formed, having the same diameter as the diameter of the top or upper portion of the base A.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the base A, provided with the standard B, the arms 0 and C, the hollow shaft E, having located therein the guide or stationary gage h, and the disk F, adapted to hold and rotate a watch-dial plate, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination of the shaft E, the disk F, having apertures, as g, and the ring or band H, located upon the periphery of the disk F, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
3. The rotating disk F, the ring or band H, located upon the periphery of the disk F and provided with the slots 6, and the set-screws f, adapted to hold the ring or band H at any desired point of adjustment, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
4 The combination of the base A, provided with the standard B, the arms 0 and C, the hollow shaft E, the adjustable gage h, and the disk F, provided with the adjustable ring or band H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. The combination of the shaft E, the disk F, attached to said shaft and adapted to rotate therewith and provided with apertures g, the rotating spider L, provided with the pins 70 and the collar 10, provided with the groove k, the yoke J, carrying the pivoted ring or band K and means for operating the spider, substantially as and for the purpose "specified.
6. The combination of the rotating disk F, provided with the ring or band H, and the gage h, provided at its top or upper end with the hook Z, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
"7. The combination of a rotating disk adapted to receive, hold, and rotate a watchdial, the plate-gage h, and the rest N, sub stantially as and for the purpose specified.
