, I 1 I This invention relates to a device for supporting tubular glassware in burning-off operations.
The invention is more particularly concerned with a simple and improved device for supporting glassware, such as pitchers and the like in such manner that the top portions thereof may be-cut ofif in planes at an acute angle to the axes thereof to give the pitchers a sloping top edge as from the handle upwardly toward the pouring spout.
A primary object of the invention is to provide a device of the above noted character which is simple in construction and which is readily adjustable to accommodate different sizes of tubular glassware as well as to vary the angularity of the top edge thereof.
A further object of the invention is to provide a device of the above noted character which is capable of manufacture at relatively low cost and which is accurate and dependable in operation.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent in the course of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the improved device in accordance with a preferred structural embodiment thereof.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional View substantially in the plane on line 22 on Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of one of the elements of the device.
Figure 4 is a side elevational View showing a glass pitcher in supported position for a burningoff operation.
Referring now in detail to the drawings, Ill designates a disk plate which is provided with a depending centrally disposed hub H.
The hub H is provided with an aperture I2 having a key way l3 for connection with a drive shaft l 4 rotatably supported in a suitable column I 5. Upon rotation of the shaft I4 by any suitable source of power, rotation will be imparted to the disk plate Ill.
The plate I is provided with a diametrical slot H5 at one side of its axes and a second dia- I metrical slot I! at the opposite side of said axis and aligned with the slot l 6. The slot I6 is closed at its outer end whereas the slot l1 opens through the periphery of the plate and may also extend into the hub H as indicated in Figure 2.
Adjustably supported upon the plate In is a glassware retaining member l8 which includes a circular disk-like base l9 and an upwardly extending rim portion which is rigid with and preferably integral with the base as shown.
The rim portion 20 has an inner cylindrical vall 21 which with the base l9 provides a circular recess. The rim portion also has an inner spherical wall '22 which extends from the cylindrical wall 2| to a relatively narrow top' edge "2'. The rim portion is further provided with 2:. notch 23 for a purpose later to appear.
The recess within wall 2% is preferably occupied by a fibrous washer member 24 which forms a seat for the glassware P indicated in Figure 4-.
The base 1-9 is provided with a tongue 25 having an aperture 26 adapted to overlie the slot It. A bolt 21 is releasably extended through the aperture 26 and slot l6 and is provided with a thumb nut 28 disposed above the tongue 25 and a washer 29 is preferably disposed between the heads of the bolt and the lower face of plate Ill.
The base I9 is further provided with a stud bolt 30 which is disposed normally to the plane of the base and has one end thereof screwed into or otherwise rigidly secured thereto.
The stud bolt 30 is adapted to project through the slot- 11 and. is provided with a thumb nut 3! bearing against a washer 32. v
The base I9 is further tapped at points equally distant at opposite sides of bolt 30 and in which are disposed screw bolts 33 whose heads are accessible above said base and whose ends engage the plate ID at opposite sides of the slot l1.
Any suitable means may be provided for retaining glassware such as a pitcher P shown in Figure 4 in position on the seat 24.
A satisfactory means is shown as including a yieldable band 34 which may be snapped over the rim portion 20 and which band is provided with a plurality of spring fingers 35 yieldingly engageable with the wall of the pitcher and which due to their spring action will accommodate pitchers of varying diameters.
However, difierent sized retaining members l8 may be used for different sized glassware.
From the above, it will be seen that the retaining member I8 is adlustably supported upon the rotatable plate I!) for adjustment diametrically thereof as well as for angular adjustment relative to the plate.
To efiect diametrical adjustment the nuts'28 and 3! are loosened whereupon the member [8 may readily be moved diametrically of the plate with the lower ends of the screw bolts 33 sliding upon the upper face thereof.
When it is desired to effect an angular adjustment the said nuts are loosened and the screw bolts 33 are turned whereupon the nuts are tightened. The purpose of the retaining member is to support any given tubular glassware in such angular position relative to the rotatable plate ID that its axis will intersect the axis of the plate I 8 at a point in the desired horizontal plane of the burning-01f operation.
Thus upon reference to Figure 4, it will be observed that the glass pitcher P is so supported that its axis a intersects the axis a of the plate ill at the point i which is in the cutting-off or burning on" plane cp.
If it were desired to burn ofi the pitcher P in 9, plane parallel with and below the plane 011 it would be necessary to adjust the member l8 toward the axis a. Furthermore, if a difierent angle to the top edge of the pitcher is desired it will be necessary to adjust the angularity of the member 18 relative to the plate [0 and suchwill also require a diametrical adjustment.
The purpose of having the axes of the plate and glassware, or member l8 intersect in the burning-01f plane is to avoid an otherwisewobbling action of the glassware upon rotation o the plate In.
- While the cut-01f edge will bean ellipse rather than a circle such will not interfere with the operation of gas burning nozzles of the form such as disclosed for example in Patent No; 2,513,542. The purpose of the notch 23 is to locate the pitcher by placing the handle adjacent the notch.
While I have disclosed my invention in accord ance with a single structural embodiment thereof, such is to be considered as illustrative only and not restrictive, the scope of the invention being defined in the subjoined claims.
What I claim and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the kind described, a vertically disposed rotatable shaft, a horizontally disposed disk plate secured centrally thereof to said shaft, a pair of diametrically aligned slots in said disk plate at opposite sides of the axis thereof, a glassware retaining member including a circular base and an upstanding rim disposed radialextending through one of said slots and the other thereof extending through the other slot, providing for adjustment of said circular base diametrically of said disk plate, nuts on said bolts for locking said circular base in diametrically ad- ,iusted position, and a screw bolt threaded through said circular base at each side of one of said slots and having their free ends engaged with said disk plate for effecting angular adjustment of the said circular base.
2. The structure according to claim 1 wherein said circular base is provided with an apertured tongue overlying one of said slots and one of said first bolts extending through the aperture in said tongue.
:3. In a device of the kind described, a. rotatable disk plate having diametrically alined slots at opposite sides of the axis thereof, a glassware retaining member including a disk-like base and an upstanding rim within the" margin of the base, a pair of screw'bolts adjustably' supported in said base and engageable with said plate, and bolt means carried by said base and extending through said slots.
4. The structure according to claim 3, Wherein said base and. said rim provide a recess, and a fibrous glassware seat disposed in said recess.
5. The structure according to claim 1, together with an arcuate spring band having spaced "free ends yieldably engaged with the outer face of said upstanding rim, and a plurality of spring fingers projecting from one edge of said band for yieldable engagement with the wall of glassware supported in said glassware retaining mem- 1y inwardly of the margin thereof, a pair of bolts carried by said circular base one of said bolts ber.
