TOBACCO HANGER.
No. 415,399. Patented NOV. 19, 1889.
Inventon UJ jtnesses Wvi/( UNITE STATES PATENT OFFICE.
VILLIAM HENRY SNOWV, OF HIGH POINT, NORTH CAROLINA.
TOBACCO-HANG ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,399, dated November 19, 1889.
Application filed October 12, 1889. Serial No. 326,870. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM HENRY Snow, a citizen of the United States, residing at High Point, in the State of North Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in TobaccoHangers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an apparatus employed in the curing of green tobacco-leaves; and it consists of an improvement in the construction of the stick or hanger upon which the leaves are strung and sustained, being specifically an improvement upon the stick or hanger forming part of the apparatus for the curing of tobacco described in Letters Patent granted to me July 14, 1885, No. 322,330, and the following is a specification of my present invention.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating the same, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved stick or hanger, one end thereof, precisely similar to that shown, being broken away. Fig. 2 is a lateral crosssection thereof. Fig. 3 is a top View of the tobacco-rack, showing how the sticks or hangers are to be used; and Fig. :l: is a sectional view thereof through the line a l) of Fig. 3.
As described in our previous patent above referred to, the stick or hanger A is of Wood of suitable dimensionssay about three feet long by one inch by three-quarters of an inch-and is provided with about seven prongs 1), preferably of steel wire, driven through the stick, extending out at right angles thereto, and extending off from each side of said stick about four inches. These sticks are arranged in racks D or on tier-poles in the well-known common log barn when in use for holding the leaves, said rack being a rectangular frame of wood having notches or sockets (Z to receive the tenoned end 0 of the sticks and support them and their load.
The leaves of tobacco are cut from the stalks, and their stem-butts are impaled on the wires until the stick or hanger is full, which is then placed in the rack or on tierpoles until the latter is full, the tenon C of the stick or hanger being supported on the rack by the insertion thereof into the mortise or socket of the rack-frame or on the tierpoles without the mortise-socket.
In the use of my stick or hanger described in said patent, as well as other sticks provided with laterally-extending hooks, prongs, or arms, much difficulty has been experienced by the prong or pin becoming loose from the wood from various causessuch as shrinkage, weight, wear, &c.and my present invention is intended to obviate that diffieulty by the means adopted by me of inserting and securing the steel wire forming the prongs, and this is accomplished as follows, viz: the steel-wire pins sharpened at both ends are driven by suitable mechanism laterally through the wood stick or hanger about three-quarters of an inch below the top surface thereof, and by other suitable mechanism the extended ends of the prongs are bent over in the opposite direction, (see Fig. 2,) and by the same operation are embedded in the surface of the wood of the stick forming the device shown in Fig. 1. By this means the prongs of steel wire extending on each side of the stick are held firmly without possibility of their being affected by shrinkage of the wood or by Wear and tear, and result in sustaining a greater weight without being moved from the horizontal line. It is obvious, however, that the pin or prong may be made in two pieces, each half being driven to the hilt into the wood and bent overin opposite directions to each other.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A tobacco stick or hanger consisting of a wooden body-piece, in combination with a series of hard-metal prongs of wire arranged at right angles thereto on either side at intervals, and inserted laterally through the body-piece and with the pointed end thereof bent over, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature this 18th day of Septemher, A. l). 1889.
WILLIAM HENRY SNOYV.
