FOUNTAIN-PEN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 41,534, dated February 9, 1864.
. Wayne, in the county of Allen and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Fountain-Pen; and I do hereby declarethat the following is a full,'clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this specification, in which- Figure l is an external view of my invention adjusted ready for use; Fig. 2, a longitudinal central section of the same, a: so, Fig. 1, indicating the plane ofsection; Fig. 3, an external view of the same adjusted in a closed state for the pocket. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the severaPfigures.
This invention relates to a new and improved fountain'pemthose which are provided.

A represents a tube, one end of which is provided witha screw-stopper, a, and the opposite end provided with a tube, I), much shorter and smaller-in diameter than A, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

The pen is fitted in a slide or chamber, .2, made in the end of the tube A, so that the pen when fitted in said slit or chamber will be at the side of the tube 1), the nib or point of the pen projecting beyond the end of b, as shown in 1 and 2.

At the end of the tube 1), in the side of it adjoining the pen B, there is made a hole, d, (shown in Fig. 2,) and upon the tube 1) there is placed a band, 0, having a hole, f, made in it equal in diameter to the hole d in the tube b. This perforated band 6 forms a valve, by opening which ink is allowcd to escape from the tube A through D and into the hollow of the pen- B. The band c has a projection, g, by which it may be turned and theholes d f made to register with each other more or less ac cording to the supply of ink required, and when the device is not in use the supplymay be entirely cut-off.
To theend of the tube 1) there is attached a small flat strip, 72, of metal,which extends along the slit of the pen nearly to its nib or point. as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. This metal strip h serves as a conductor to convey theink to the nib or point.
The tube A is supplied with ink by unscrewing the stopper a, and the flow to the pen is obtained by adjusting the .band e so that its'holef will register with the hole d in tube b.
The tube 11, in consequence of being smaller in diameter than. A, will. have a tendency to conduct or feed the ink down by capillary at; traction, while the motion communicated to the pen in the act of writingaljso has a tendency to feed the ink to the pen. \Vhen the implement is in use, the end vofthe tube A is inserted in the end of a case, (J, which renders the device of convenient length for a penhandle, and when the device is not designed for use the pen is inserted in the case 0, as shown in Fig. 3. It may then be carried in the pocket.
