To all whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, HENRY STOCKMANN, a citizen ofthe United States, residing at Brooklyn, Kings county, New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fountainlens,v of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to means fo-r regulating the lowof ink in fountain-pens; and it consists inthe novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter `described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side View. Fig. 2 is a detail view of parts. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on the line x x, Fig. 1.

The letter A designates the handle of the pen, which is tubular and forms the ink-reservoir. The lower end of this handle is open, and onsuch end thereof is a nipple, B, of tapering form, through which nipple the ink discharges from the handle. For attaching this nipple B to the handle, it is screw-threaded on the upper part, where it is cylindrical, while for discharging the inkit'is provided with a lateral orifice, G, at or near the lower end.
On the nipple B is a valve, D, which is capable ot' rotating thereon, and is provided with an orifice, F, adapted to registerwith the orifice G of the nipple. The valve D is formed. with a shank, G, which extends downward to a point opposite the lnib of the pen proper, as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with a channel, II, for conveying the ink from the valveorifice F to the nib of the pen, this channel extending lengthwise of the shank from the valve-oriflce to the end thereof.
Surrounding the valve D is a sleeve, I, forming a pen-holder, this sleeve being attached on the upper end, as by a screw-thread, leaving thelower end detached, so that a pen may y be inserted between it and the valve, where it is held in position to receive the ink.
It will be seen that by properly adjusting the valve-orice F in relation to the nippleoriiice C the iiow-of the ink can be regulated with nicety, or it may be entirely shut off,
while by the tapering form of the nipple a very tight joint is produced between it and the valve without preventing the valve from turning easily, the nipple being in effect silnilar to the spigot of a faucet. In order to indicate when the valve D is entirely open, suitable marks are made on a visible portion thereof and of the nipple, as shown in Fig. 2, and toy facilitate the adjustment of the valve it is provided with a flange, J. The nipple also is provided .with a flange, K, to abut against the lower end of the handle.
rIhe expulsion of the ink from the handle is produced by the expansion of the air therein, due to the heat of the lingers transmitted to the handle when it is taken hold of', and when the pen has been used a considerable length of `time Vthe valve lshould be adjusted to graduate thegdischarge of the ink.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A fountain-pen embodying in its structure the tubular handle, forming an ink-reservoir, the tapering nipple on the lower endl ot"A the handle, having a lateral discharge-orifice, the rotating valve on the nipple, having an oriice to register with the nipple-orifice, and the sleeve on the valve, forming a pen-holder, substantially as and for the purpose described. 2; A fountain-pen embodying in itsfstrueture the tubular handle, forming an ink-reservoir, the tapering nipple on the lower end of Athe handle, having a lateral discharge-oriice,
the rotating valve on the nipple, having an oririce adapted to register with the nipple-orifice, and a shank provided with a channel for conveying the ink from the valve-orice to the nib of the pen, and. the sleeveon the valve, forming a pen-holder, substantially as and for the purpose described.
