SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,131, dated November 12, 1889. Application filed April 9, 1889. Serial No. 306,576. (No model.)

Be it known that I, MiRoN G. ToUsLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing` at Englewood, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have inventedcertain new and use ful Improvements in Table-lVaiters; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specilication, and to the letters and ignres of reference marked thereon.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in revolving table-waiters of that class designed to stand on a table where a group of lighter supply-dishes are ordinarilyplaced, so that any one at the ta-V ble can revolve the same to bring the desired article within his or her reach.
The objects of the invention are to provide a portable device for use on any ordinary dining-table, which shall combine in the one article lightness, durability, ease in operation, and attractiveness.
To the accomplishment of the above ends and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the peculiar combinations and the novel construction, arrangement, and adaptation of parts, all 'as more fully -hereinafter described, shown in the drawings,and then particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters ot reference marked thereon, form a part of this speciiication, and in which- Figure 1 is a top plan of my improved waiter. Fig. 2 is a central vertical transverse section of the same. Fig. is an enlarged sectional detail of the parts-at the pivot.
Referring now to the details of -the drawings by letter, A designates the top, which may be of any desired shape and size, and is formed at its outer edge with a downwardlyextending slightlyoutwardly-inclined rim d, preferably scalloped, as shown. This rim adds to the appearance of the device and Serves as a means for turning the said top by placing a iinger underneath in a manner which will be readily understood, which prevents soiling ot' the polished surface of the top. This top is made as fanciful as may be desired, and 's made of metal, so as to give strength and durability and to provide for plating, enameling, or japanning, as may be desired. This top is open-work or perforated to give lightness to the same, as well as to add to the ornamental appearance of the same. This top is provided centrally with a equidistances from said hole the under side of the top is formed or provided with the I hole I), slightly countersunk, as shown, and at downwardly-extending lugs or points, which are adapted to ride 1n a'groove or track in the base portion, soon to be described.

In practice the top is laid upon the base portion, with the lugs c in the groove or track d, and the hole b in the top coincident with The base at its center is formed with the hole in the central boss of the base. A
screw D is then passed through the hole in the top and the hole in the boss, and a nut g screwed thereon. Said nut, being confined in the squared socket in the under side of the boss, is prevented from turning. A tube his iitted to the hole in the top and the hole in the boss, and may be ixedly attached to either the top or base or to the screw, this being immaterial; but the use of the tube is considered of special importance, as it forms a means of receiving the friction of the parts, permits of setting the screw or bolt and nut tightly beyond the power of tightening or unserewing by the revolving of the top and without binding the attached parts. The head of IOO the serewor boltis seated in the counter-sink in the top, as shown, although this countersink might be omitted withoutmaterially affecting the other features of construction, but is preferred, as it gives a more finished appearance.
The device sits at any desired place on the table, and one or more may be employed, as the length of the table may require.
The base may be of such a height that plates maybe set upon the table beneath the top without being interfered with in the revolution thereof.
The whole device is enameled, plated, or otherwise treated to gix'e it as ornamental an appearance as the wishes of the p urehaseror manufacturer may dictate.
The parts being all of metal avoid the danger of warpagc, shrinkage, and twisting out of order in the revolution of the top, and enable me to provide the parts separately and warrant their iitting.
The track or groove in which the lugs of the top work should have a suitable lubricant placed therein to decrease the friction between the parts; but this may be omitted.
The parts may be readily detached for packing and as readily put together by any person without the employment of skilled labor.
The sides of the groove or track in the hase are preferably inclined andthe bott-om sub stantially fiat, and the sides of the lugs on the top are also preferably slightly inclined,
so as t-o allow a little freedom of the parts and allow the top to tip slightly without binding of the parts lfVhat I claim as new isl. In a portable revolving table-waiter, the combination, with the top formed with eentral hole, and the base having central boss having a hole therein, of the screw passed through said holes and provided at its lower end with a nut, and the tube loosely embracing said screw and fitted in said holes, serving as a bearing between the base and tabletop and preventing contact of the table-top with the screw, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
2. The combination, with the perforated metallic top having a central hole, and the base formed with a central boss having a hole therethrough, and a squared socket upon its under side, et the screw passed through said holes, the tube around said screw in said holes serving as a bearing between the base and tabletop and preventing contact ot' the table-top with the screw, and the nut upon the lower end of the screw within said socket, substantially as shown and described.
