GRAIN-BINDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,123, dated November 12, 1889.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, IVILLIAM M. PIATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maco-cheek, in the county of Logan and State of Ohio, have invented Improvements in Grain- Binders, of which the following is a specification.
In order that my invention may be fully understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings,
' forming part of this specilication, in which- Figure I is a plan of my main platform and binding mechanism. Fig Ia is a perspective view of a bearing-sleeve and clamping-nuts by which the brackets are secured together. Fig. II is a rear elevation. Figs. III, IV, and V are detail views of my curved needle or binder-arm, showing it in its upper, intermediate, and operative positions, respectively. Fig. VI is a side lelevation of my reel. Fig. VII is a vertical section thereof on the line VII VII, Fig. VI, on a larger scale.
My improvements consist in the construction hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
lis the main frame, having the rollers 2 and main apron 3, supported on the rollers. The main apron is provided with series of teeth or brackets transverse thereof. Each tooth or bracket is made of metal of suitable kind and formed with a tiatbase 4 and projection 5, inclined backward, so that the teeth or brackets are enabled to forward the grain to the binder without dragging it. Where the projections are inclined forward they are found to force the grain unnecessarily. The base of each tooth or bracket is secured by rivets to the web of the apron, and if a thin web is employed a metal stay or plate 6 can be placed beneath the web.

1l is a needle-shaft, having crank-Wheel l2, provided with wrist-pin I3, which forms the pivot for a curved needle 14, hinged thereto vand Working in the head of the standard. Secured to the head are a pair of brackets 15, extending acrosstthe binding-table and providing supports for the packer driving-shaft 18 and stationary rod 19 and ejector- shafts 26 and 27. The rod is secured fixedly to the bracket by clamp-nuts 19a. Between the brackets and around the shafts 18, 26, and
- 27 are secured bearing-sleeves 16 by clampnuts 17. The bearing-sleeves and clamp-nuts form means for uniting the brackets, and the bearing-sleeves provide journal-bearings for the shafts.
2O are rollers keyed to the driving-shaft 1S, and 2l are rollers turning on the rod 19. EX- tending over the rollers are the upper aprons 22, provided with my improved rearwardlyinclined teeth 4 5. Hinged to the drivingshaft and extending over the binding-table are cut-off boards or Wings 23. These Wings are raised to permit the passage. of the i11- eoming grain or lowered to prevent the ejectors from grasping the incoming grain by means of levers 24, hinged to the head of the Y standard and connected to plates 25 on the Wings.
26 is the inner ejector-shaft, and 27 the outer ejector-shaft. On these shafts are secured the cam-tracks 28, and on these shafts are mounted the sprocket-wheels 29, carrying endless chains 30, having ejector-fingers 3l. The inner ejector-shaft has keyed to it cams 32, having grooves 33, in which travel studs 34 on the inner ends of the levers, providing means by which the levers are operated to move the wings. To cause the needle to move in the elliptical path indicated in dotted lines, I connect the middle portion of the needle with the outer ejector-shaft by means of a link 35, hinged to said shaft and secured to a stud 36 on the needle. To assist the link in directing the needle, I provide," in addition thereto, a double link 37, connected to the rear side of the needle by means of a stud 38, and to a post 39, secured to one of the brackets l5.
40 is the combined retaining-finger and compressor acting on one side of the bundle, while the needle acts as a compressor on the other side of the bundle.
4l is the trigger or trip-arm.
At the front end of the binding-table, arranged transversely thereof, is a spiral or screw conveyer 42, for adjusting the but-ts of the grain. This conveyer has a shaft 43, by

which it is journalcd to the main frame. It is driven by a sprocket-wheel 4:4, connected by a chain 45 with a sprocket-wheel -lt on the main shaft 47 of the machine.
48 and i9 are notches or recesses in the table and eut-oit boards or wings, respectively, for the passage of the teeth ot the apron and belts.
50 is the reel-shaft, having a circumferentially-groovcd sleeve 51 moved thereon by a lever 52. The reel comprises a fixed hub 53, having arms 5l, and loose hub 55, having arms 56, the arms carrying bats 57, loosely connected thereto. On the reel-shaft, between the hubs, I secure adj ustably, by means of a set-screw 59, the bracket 58, which is formed with arms 58 and a projection 58". The latter forms a support for a rack til, passing therethrough and sliding therein, and the outer end of a rod Gt) is connected to the rack (il at one end and is connected at the other end to the sleeve 5l. Thearms of the bracket form supports for a worin-shaft (52, journaled in suitable bearings therein. The inner end of the loose hub 55 is provided with a wormwheel G3, with which the worm of the wormshaft meshes, and the worm-shaft isprovided with a pinion (il, rotated by the rack. These means provide an improved device for adjusting the position of the bats.
In Letters Patent No. 367,441, dated August 2, 1887, I have shown and described 4means for adjusting` the reel-bats which do not permit sutlicient play to the looselymounted reel-hub, as the crank and segment movement is very much limited, while in the present construction the movement is extensive. In the former construction the level' controllingl the rack-segment has to be locked while at rest to resist the pressure of the grain on the reel-bats, while in the present construction, by means of the worm-shaft and worin-wheel, the mechanism is self-locking, and the lever is not hamperedl with locking mechanism. In thepresent construction the outer hub is oscillated and the inner stationary hub is used as a guide for the connecting-rod. 4
The machine operates as follows: The grain is cut and reeled to the main apron,- and by means of this apron and the upper aprons is packed into the space beneath the head and arm of the standard on the bindin g-table, the spiral or screw conveyer assisting the packin g' by adjustingl the butts of the grain. Then enough grain has been forced onto the table,

The tying' and ejeetiirgr of the b undle'are accomplished as in Letters Patient No. 384,072, dated J une 5, 1888.
Having thus described my invention, the followingl is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. The combination o f the needle-shaft., crank-wheehhaving eccentric wrist-pin, the curved needle hinged at its outer or upper end to the wrist-pin, the outer ejector-shaft, and the link-connection between the outer ejector-shaft and the middle portion of the needle, substantially as described.
, 2. The combination ot' the needle-shaft, crank-wheel having,` eccentric wrist-pin, the curved needle hinged at its outer or upper end to the wrist-pin, the outer ejector-sliatt, the link-connection between the outer ejectorshaft and the middle portion ot theneedle, and the double link-connection between the packer-frame and the needle, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the reel-shaft 50, of the sliding;l grooved sleeve 5l, the lever 52, engaging the sleeve, the inner hub 53, fixed to the reel-shaft, having arms 5I, the outer sleeve or hub 55, loosely mounted on the reelshaft., having arms 56, the bats 57, connected to the arms, the worm-wheel (53, fixed to the inner end of the outer sleeve or hub, the bracket 58, having arms 58 and projection 58", the worm-shaft G2, journaled in the arms, having its worm meshing with the wormwheel, the gear-wheel 64, fixed to the wormshaft, the rack (51, sliding in the projection and meshing with the gear-wheel, and the rod 60,co11neeted at one end to the rack and at the other end to the sleeve, substantially as described.
