Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. OLIN, re-
siding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Adjusting the Delivery of the Grain to a Self-Binder, of which the following is a full description, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is aplan View showingthe arrangement of the carrying-frame for the binder and the frame for the grain-delivery canvas or carrier; Fig. 2, an under side view with the platform-frame broken off; Fig. 3, a side elevation; Fig. 4, a cross-section through the binder and platform-frame, with the side piece of the frame broken off; Fig. 5, a cross-sectin of the sliding shaft from which the sickle is driven. The binding of grain by a self-binder is attended with one difficulty arising from the varying length of grain, and that is properly encompassing the bundle with the band at or near the center, to obviate which it has been customary to make the binder adjustable, so as to change its position in relation to the delivery of the grain and bring the hind cr-armin position to encompass the bundle at or near its center, and although this works successfully and gives general satisfaction, still it is attended with more or less difficulty, owing to the manner in which it is necessary to locate and support the binder in order to have it adjustable.
The object of this invention is to attain the result of binding the grain at or near the center of the bundle without changing the location of the binder; and its nature consists in providing a main supporting-frame on which the binder and other appliances are carried, and connecting therewith a secondary or platform frame carrying the sickle. and grain-delivery canvas or carrier, and which can be ad- I justed bodily fore and aft on the main or binder frame to change the delivery of the grain to the binder, all as hereinafter particularly described, and then specified in the claims.
In the drawings a complete machine is not shown, but only so much as is necessary to illustrate the invention.
A represents the main or binder frame, which may be made of side pieces, a a, and end pieces, a a, withan intermediate piece, a, running from end piece to end piece, or in any other suitable manner adapted to receive and support the binder mechanism, the main and drive wheel, and devices connected therewith and operated therefrom for working the sickle and grain-delivery devices.
B is the platform-frame,which may be made of end pieces I) b, with side pieces I) b, and an intermediate piece, If, running from end piece to end piece, one of the pieces I) being in line with the outer side piece of the main frame, and the piece b located so as to be in line with the inner side piece of the main or binder frame, or in any other suitable manner that will bring the parts in such relative position as to enable an attachment to be made with the main or binder frame, and form a frame capable of receiving the delivery-canvas and supporting the sickle. The grain or the outer end (adjacent to the standing grain) of this platform is provided with a divider, either attached to the end piece I) or forming a part thereof.
0 are clasps, made of wrought metal or other suitable material, and formed to extend over the side pieces of the main or binder frame and to be attached to the inner side piece b and the intermediate piece, I)", of the platformframe by bolts, or otherwise connecting the platform-frame to the main frame, so that it can slide back and forth thereon. This attachment of the platform-frame and the main E is a rotating shaft supported in a bracket or arm, E, and carrying at its rear end a binder or cord arm, (I, and actuated by a sprocketwheel, 6, by means of a chain and connecting devices from the main or drive wheel. The actuating devices are not shown, neither is the binderarm and its support carried out in detail, as they may be of any of the well-known and usual forms of construction and arrangement, operating in the usual manner to eneompass the bundle with the binding-cord and carry the cord to the tying devices, which lat ter also are not shown, but are located beneath the binding-table D in any usual and wellknown manner.
F is a frame having side pieces and a top or horizontal piece, the lower ends of the side pieces being attached, respectively, to the outer side piece a of the binder-frame and intermediate piece, a", with the ends of each side extending below such pieces. As shown, the inner side piece of this frame is extended up, so as to form a hand-lever, F. The lower ends of the side pieces are connected with the platform-frame by means of connecting bars or links f. This frame F, with its lever F and the connecting-links f, forms one means for sliding the platformframe on the binder-frame by taking hold of the lever F and swinging the lever forward or backward as required to slide the platform-frame backward or forward. Other means than this frame, lever, and links can be usedfor moving the platfornrframe, and instead of making the lever F a hand-lever it might be arranged as a foot-lever.
G is a segmental bar having openings or notches g to receive a pin, g, 011 the outer side bar of the frame, and hold the frame in any position in which it may be adjusted, so as to lock the platform-frame in any desired position; but other means can be used for this purpose.
H is the main or drive wheel, located on a shaft, h, which has its bearings h located 011 the outer side piece a, and intermediate piece, a, of the main frame.
I is a gear-wheel located on the shaft 71, and rotated by the main or drive wheel.
J is a pinion meshing with the gear I.
K is a shaft, on one end of which is secured the pinion J, which shaft has its hearings in the intermediate frame-piece, a and inner frame-piece, a, of the main or binder frame.
L is a beveled gear-wheel attached to the inner end of the shaft K.
M is a beveled gear-wheel meshing with the gear L.
N is a shaft, on the forward end of which is located the pinion M. i
O are arms for supporting the shaft N, the forward one of which is attached to the inner piece, a, of the main or binder frame, so as to remain stationary, and the rear one of which is slotted or made in two parts, and attached to the intermediate cross-piece, b of the platform-frame, so as to move with such frame.
I is a sprocket-wheel located on the shaft N between the rear supports, 0, and attached to such shaft so as to revolve therewith, and at the same time allow the shaft N to slide forward and backward, which attachment may be made by providing a groove in the shaft N to receive a spline in the opening of the wheel P, through which the shaft passes.
Q is a drive-chain.
R is a sprocket-wheel, over which and the sprocket-wheel P the drive-chain Q passes.
S is a shaft having on its forward end a disk, S, carrying a crank-pin, '6, to which the inner end of the sickle is attached, and by means of which the sickle is driven. This shaft is supported in suitable bearings, j, located on the front and rear pieces, I), of the platfornrframe.
T is a brace-rod attached at its forward end to the inner piece, a, of the main or hinder frame, and extending back and passing through guides or bearings 7c, located on the front and rear pieces of the platform-frame, so as to be free to slide in such guides to allow the platform-frame to be adjusted fore and aft.
As shown, the rear end ofthe main or binder frameis supported by a caster-wheel, I, located in a frame or support, on, pivotally attached by a journal or pin, 0, to a bracket, 11,, attached to the rear piece, a, of the main or hinder frame; but this end of the main or hinder frame might be supported in some other man ner, and the attachment of the caster-wheel could be made to the main or binder frame in some other place than to the rear piece, so long as the location of the caster-wheel is such as to allow a free adjustment of the platformframe on the main or binder frame, and as shown the grain end of the platform-frame is supported by a grain-wheel, p, which may be constructed and arranged in the usual manner.
The carrier is not shown, nor the devices for operating it; but it is to be located in the platform-frame and arranged to deliver the grain onto the receiving-table, where it is to be bound; and it maybe made of canvas provided with slats, or of chains provided with teeth,
or in any other suitable and well-known form of construction.
The operation is as follows: The binder-frame has the binder supported thereon, so as to remain in a fixed position, and this frame also is fixed in relation to its supporting-wheels. WVhen binding long grain, the secondary or platform frame is carried forward to the extent of its movement by the adjusting deviceseither the lever and the frame F F and connecting-links f or other devices bringing the cut of the machine farther forward in relation to the binder, so that the grain as it is cut will IIO fall on the platform with its butts farther for ward in relation to the travel of the binderarm, and the band will be carried around the grain for the bundle farther back and ator near the center thereof. \Vhen binding medium grain, the platform is adjusted so as tobring it midway of the limit of its movement fore and aft, so that the grain as it is cut will fall on the platform with its butts farther back in relation to the binder than for long grain, bringing it in position for the binding-arm to encompass the bundle at or near the center. \Vhcn binding short grain, the platform is carried back to the extent of its movement by the adj nsting devices, bringing the cut nearer to the binder, so that the butts will fall on the platform and the grain be delivered to the binder, to have the arm encompass the bundle at or near the center. The extremes of adjustment fore and aft will take in extremely long and extremely short grain, and the medium adjustment between these two positions can be varied to suit different lengths of medium grain and have the bundle encompassed by the binding-cord in the proper manner, so that by this arrangement the delivery of the grain to the binder can be made irrespective of its length.
As shown, the main driving-wheel is located forward of the cut; but it could be located in line with or at rear of cut, the main frame inclosing the same, and the platform-frame being located with the drivewheel between its sides or at rear, as the position of the wheel requires. This wheel is to be supported, as usual, to raise and lower the frame for the cut, and could be located outside of the main frame, if desired.
The arrangement of the driving mechanism for the sickle and carrier on the platformframe and the connection thereof with the main wh'eel can be changed to suit the form of machine, whether front, center, or rear out, and to suit the form and arrangement of the cutter and the grain-carrier in relation to each other and to the main wheel; but in all cases the arrangement must be one to allow the platform-frame to be moved bodily fore and aft, carrying with it the sickle and the platform.
Vhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, with the main frame carrying a self-binder, of a platfornrframe connected to the main frame so as to slide thereon, whereby it may be adjusted fore and aft bodily on the main frame, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with the main frame carrying a self-binder, of the platform-frame connected to the main frame so as to slide thereon, and a lever fulcrumed to the main frame and connected with the platform-frame, for adjusting the same fore and aft on the main frame, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with the main frame and the platform-frame connected thereto so as to slide thereon, of the shaft journaled in bearings connected one to the main frame and the other to the platform-frame, the sprocketwheel connected to said shaft so as to slide thereon, the sickle-shaft on the platformframe, and the sprocket-chain connecting said shaft with the sliding sprocket-wl1eel, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with the main frame and the platform-frame adapted to slide thereon, of the brace T, extending from the platform-frame to and connected with the main frame, substantially as described.
5. The combination of the main frame ca rying the binding mechanism, the platformframe connected thereto by clasps, and adapt ed-to slide thereon, and supporting the sickle and carrier, and the lever fulcrumed to the main frame and connected by links with the sliding platform-frame, substantially as de scribed.
