IMPROVEMENT IN HAR'VESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 170,388, dated November as, 1875; application filed July 15, 1875.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEANDERJ. McGORMIOK, of Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harvesters, of which the following is a specification:
My invention more especially relates to that class of harvesters in which the grain is bound by persons riding on the machine. Some of the improvements are, however, adapted to barvesters generally.
The subjectmatter claimed will hereinafter specifically be designated.
1n the accompanying drawings,Figure 1 represents a plan or top view of such of a harvesting-machine embodying my improvements in the best way now known to me, as is necessary to illustrate the subject-matter herein claimed, with portions of the mechanism broken away to more clearly show the parts. Fig. 2 represents a view, in elevation, of the machine as seen from the rear. Fig. 3 represents a vertical transverse section through a part of the machine, on the line as w of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical transverse section therethrough on the line y y of Fig. 1.
The main frame A is mounted upon a driving-wheel, B, and a grain-wheel, 0, upon which it is capable of being raised and lowered in well-known ways. A tongue, D, is forked at its rear end, and pivoted on the main frame by bolts 61 on each side of the driving-wheel.
An adjustable link, 0, is pivoted at one end to.
the tongue, and at the other to a cranked shaft, E, rocking in hearings in the elevator-frame F. An adjusting or lifting lever, E, secured on this crank-shaft, serves to rock it, and it is held in any desired position by a springdetent, of the usual construction, mounted on the lever. The handle of this lever extends backward to a point within easy reach of the driver when in his seat G. An endless apron, H, conveys the cut grain to an endless elevating-apron, I I, from which it falls over a deflector-board, K K, into a suitable receptacle, having binding-tables L L in front and rear thereof. The binders stand upon a platform, M, both it and the binding-tables, as well as the grain-receptacle, being mounted upon a frame, N, separate from the main frame, but
connected therewith by ajoint, n, in or about the line of the axis of the main wheel, so that the binders table or stand may rock independently of the main frame. To accommodate this movement, the binder-frame is attached to the main frame by means of eyebolts or link-rods m m, pivoted to the frame near its outer upper corner, and connected with the main frame by hook-fastenings, which admit E and its connections, to raise and lower the cutting apparatus by rocking the main frame upon the axes of the driving and grain wheels, the neck-yoke of the horses forming the fulcrum around which the tongue rocks. At the same time, the binding-frame is correspondingly rocked on its pivots by means of the link It, thus keeping the binding frame and tables horizontal.
An overhung-reel, 0, is mounted in suitable hearings in crank-arms o o, projecting from a rock-shaft, 0 mounted in standards 0 O projecting from the front of the elevator-frame. An arm, P, projecting from the rock-shaft, is pivoted to a lever, P sliding endwise through a slot in a standard, P mounted on the elevator-frame. Notches p, on the lever P, engage with the pin in the slot of the standard, and serve to lock it in any desired position.
By this construction, a wide range of adjustment may be given to the reel.
A sprocket-wheel, b, on the driving-wheel, drives a corresponding sprocket pulley, q, mounted upon an adjustable tension-arm, Q,
. by means of a chain, Q.
A sprocket-pulley, g, on the same shaft as the pulley q, drives a corresponding sprocketpulley, r, turning in hearings on an axis 00- incident with that of the rock-shaft 0 by means of a chain, it. A similar chain, R, en-
circles a sprocket-wheel, 'r, on an axis coincident with that of the pulley 1", and another sprocket-wheel, W, on the reel-shaft.
By this means the reel can be raised and lowered without altering the tension of the driving-chain.
A spur-gear, B, on the driving-wheel drives a corresponding pinion, s, mounted on the counter -.shaft, and provided with suitable backing-ratchets. A bevel-wheel, S, turning loosely on this counter-shaft, gears into a bevel-pinion, t, on the crank-shaft t. A clutch, s sliding on the counter-shaft, is controlled by a yoke, 8 on a rock-shaft, S, controlled by a lever, S", extending up to within easy reach of the driver to throw the mechanism into or out of gear. A spur-gear, T, on the crank-shaft, drives on idle gear, T, which in turn drives a spur-gear, T, on the roller of the endless apron.
Thecutters are driven by a pitman, u, connected with a rocking-lever, 11., extending beneath the endless apron in a well-known way. A sprocket-wheel, V, mounted on the crankshaft, drives a chain, 0;, encircling a sprocketpulleygV, on the upper roller of the lower elevating apron. A spur-wheel, "12, on the same shaft axis, drives a corresponding gear,
' V, on the upper roller of the endless apron.
The operation and advantages of my improved machine will be obvious from the foregoing description.
I claim- 1. The binding-frame, constructed substaning the cranked shaft and tongue, the binding-frame pivoted on the main frame, and the link connectingvsaid frame with the crank1ever, whereby the binding tables and platform are kept horizontal while the cuttingapparatus is being raised andlowered.
3. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore set forth, of the overhung reel'shaft,
the cranked rock-shaft, in which it is mounta i ed, the arm projecting from the rock-shaft, and the adjustable endwise-movinglever, pivoted thereto, whereby the reel may be raised and lowered.
