HEMMING ATTACHMENT FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 415,035, dated November 12, 1889.

citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in l-Iemmers for Sewing-Machines, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

My invention relates to improvements in hemmers for sewing-machines; and to this end it consists in an improved form of folder and hemmer designed especially for use with knitted goods, but applicable as well with any hind of fabric. Its especial object is to provide a hemmer which shall fold the goods accurately and without wrinkles and at the same time smooth out the waste edge, so that it will not be liable to foul the needle or become sewed fast to the hem. I accomplish this by the novel mechanism hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims which follow this specification.

My invention will be better understood by referring to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a plan, and Fig. 2 an end, View of my invention. Fig. 3 represents a horizontal section taken on line 00 :20, Fig. 1. Fig. at represents a detail view of apiece of goods in the machine with the attachment for avoiding wrinkles and preventing the waste edges from becoming stitched fast.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, B is the bedplate of a sewing-machine, to which my device is attached by one or more screws F, passin g directly through the base-plate A thereof, which carries all of the attachments, as will be explained.

The base-plate A is composed of a fiat piece of metal adapted to rest upon the bed-plate B, and is provided with a flange or upward projection a on the side adjacent to the folder.

D is the scroll, of usual construction, soldered or otherwise affixed to the base-plate A.

E is the sliding folder, adapted to slide laterally in loops L L, affixed to the base-plate,

and provided with notches P P P into which takes a catch G on a fiat spring S, fastened also to the base-plate.

M is a sliding cloth-guide resting directly on the base-plate beneath the sliding folder and the lower side of the loops L L. This cloth-guide extends, as shown, into the loop or turn of the folder E, and is provided on one of its edges, near the rear end thereof, with adjusting notches, and a retainingspring S, having a lug G similar to G, is secured to the base-plate A, so as to be adapted to hold the said guide in any position desired, dependent upon the position of the folder E. The folder F. is turned up, as at E, and the sliding cloth-guide M has a similar attachment E for manipulating said parts. The.

loops L L are formed of metal and are secured in any suitable manner to the baseplate A, and have in their upper parts crosspieces I), on which the folder E is supported. The loop L has on its sides the extensions H H, which limit the outward movement of the springs S S, and it is also provided with a cross-piece 0 near its base, said cross-piece being above the cloth-guide M and adapted to abut against the angular or shouldered portion (1 of said guide, so as to prevent its withdrawal from the loops.

The operation of the apparatus is as follows: The sliding folder is set to the desired width of hem, as shown at E and E, by means of the spring Sand catch G in notches P P P and the goods to be hemmed folded at its edge in the manner shown in Fig. l, the

body of the goods lyingon the base-plate to the left of the hemmer, as shown in Fig. 3, the sliding cloth-guide M having been fixed in position between the two upper folds by means of its retaining-spring S and lug G, the latter taking in the proper notch in the edge'of the guide. turned back into the scroll D, as clearly shown in Fig. 4:, so that as the cloth is advanced by the feed the wrinkles are removed and the hem stitched accurately and neatly, while the knife K cuts it off.

The waste edge is then IOO I am aware that it is not new with me to provide a sewing-machine with an adjustable folder with a scroll and a trimming-knife, and I do not, therefore, claim such features.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A hemmer attachment for a sewing-machine, consisting of a plate adapted to be socured to the bed-plate of the machine and having an edge-nneurling scroll secured thereto, a sliding folder with notches therein, a catch adapted to engage with either of said notches, a sliding cloth-guide with notches and a catch for the same, and loops forming ways for said sliding folder and cloth-guide, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. In a heinmer attachment, a base-plate with loops aflixed thereto, a sliding folder working in said loops and having notches on one of its edges, a cloth-guide extending into the bend of the folder and o jierating in ways below the said folder, and spring-catches secured to the base-plate and engaging the said sliding folder and guide, said parts be ing combined substantially as described.

3. In a hemmer attachment, a base-plate with loops, a cloth-guide, and a folder, the cloth-guide below the folder and extending into its looped end and both the folder and cloth-guide having the notches, as described, and springs secured to thebase-plate and having lugs which engage in the said notches of the cloth-guide and folder, respectively, said parts being combined substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

4:. A hemmer attachment consisting of a base-plate with loop secured thereto, an angular or shouldered cloth-guide, anda folder, said loops having cross-pieces b, forming supports for the folder, and one of the loops having a cross-piece c, forming a stop for the cloth-guide, said parts being combined sub stantially as described.
