To all whom mag concern:

Be it known that I, GEORGE W. TALLMAN, a

citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented new and usefulImprovementsin Rein-Buttons; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of said invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates to an improvement in rein-buttons and to the means for connecting the same to the reins or lines, whereby the same may be applied readily at any desired point or adjusted at any time without perforating or injuring the rein, and providing for a firm hold on the reins or lines and preventing the same from slipping through the fingers, and consequently giving a better and more full control of the animal.

The invention consists in providing the button with a slot for the passage of the rein or line and in providing said button with a pivoted biting-jaw to engage the rein and hold the button thereon in any desired posi tion and acting to, grip with greater force as the strain upon the rein is increased, all as hereinafter explained. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a rear view of the button. Fig. 2 is a front view of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-section showing the rein with the button applied.

,with a recess 0 O, in which "is mounted a holding-jaw D, preferably in inverted-T form, the perpendicular or shank portion forming the part through which said jaw is pivotally connected with the buttpn, and which fits within the portion 0 of the recess, While the horizontal or biting portion fits and is adapted to move in the portion Of of the recess. The biting portion of the jaw is made in circular form in crosssection, and is provided with longitudinal teeth 61 or a roughened gripping-face, as shown at E, and which portion is adapted to engage the face of the rein and holdthe same clamped between it andthe face of the slot.

In applying the button the same is slipped upon the rein and brought to any desired position, the jaw being swung out or raised for the purpose, and when brought to such position the jaw is swung or pressed into the recess, and, as above stated, clamps the rein between its toothed or roughened face and the face of the slot, as shown in Fig. 3.

As the jaw is pivoted and arranged .to swing inward in the direction of the pull, it will be readily seen that as the strain upon the rein is increased the jaw will grip the same with greater force to hold said button clamped to the rein. It will also be seen from the construction described that the button can be very readily applied or adjusted to any part of the lines or reins, even while driving or speeding, and is adapted to fit any rein. It will also be seen that it is not necessary to perforate the rein and that the button can be applied or removed without marring or injuring the rein.

Having now described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,

A rein-holder consisting of a circular button having one of its faces convex and provided with a slot for the reception of the rein, a recess intersecting said slot, anda dog or jaw pivoted within the same to clamp the rein and hold it against one side of the slot, as set forth.
