SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 414,447, dated November 5, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALBERT D. RAY, of Elgin, in the county of Kane and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Devices for Stropping Razors, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This invention consists in a device of novel construction for stropping or sharpening razors, designed to be hung upon a wall, window-casing, bureau, or other convenient place or structure, the same combining a flexible strop, a spring-roll to which said strop is attached at its one end, and a casing, with attached carrying-swivel, having the springroll within it and adapted to draw and, roll up the strop within it and to permit of its being drawn out therefrom against the tension of the spring-roll when required for use, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 represents alongitudinal sectional view of the device upon the line a: a: in Fig. 2 with the strap or strop rolled up within the casing, and showing it by dotted lines when extended or partially drawn out of the easing. Fig. 2 is a transverse section upon the line y y in Fig. 1, and showing the strop as partly extended; and Fig. 3, an end view of the device with the strop rolled up and as pendent on or from a wall or other surface. A indicates the flexible strap or strop made of leather or other suitable material-such, for instance, as is in common use by barbers and others for sharpening razors-and which has its opposite sides, usually of different finish, available for stropping purposes. The one or inner end of this strop A is attached to a hollow roll B, around which it is adapted to be wound or reeled. Vv ithin this roll and attached to it is a longitudinal centrifugal spiral spring C, composed of a plurality of cylindrical coils in one spring, whereby the number of revolutions of the drum' is greatly increased and the tension thereof is equalized, and which serves by rotating the roll to wind the strop on it, thus making the roll B a spring one. The spring 0 is attached at its one end to the roll B and at its other end to a shaft 19, upon which the spring is coiled and on which the roll revolves. This shaft b is firmly secured at its ends, preferably by riveting at its one end and by a nut c,iitting a screw-thread at its other end, or otherwise to flanged end caps (Z d of a box, casing, or

To provide for drawing the strop out against the tension of the spring-roll and to arrest it when drawn by the latter into the casing, said strop is provided with a handle E at its outer end. This handle is represented as made of a piece of wire bent into the form of a handle and arranged to fit at its ends into a tube 7c, pressed into or otherwise secured to the leather of the strop.

To use the device, which is suspended by the swivel e, as described, the strop A is drawn out by its handle E from the-box or casing against the tension of the spring-roll and the razor stropped, as usual, after which the strop is released and reeled again on the roll by the action of the spring within the box or casing.

When the strop is drawn out for use, the swivel 6 provides for the easy turning of the box or casing without taking it from its hook, so as to expose both sides of the strop alternately to strop the razor, as required.
