SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 414,408, dated November 5, 1889.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AXEL K. HATTEBERG, of Marshfield, in the county of WVood and State of IVisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Sandpapering-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to sandpaper-ingmachines, the object of the invention being to provide forthe reciprocation of a sandpaper-carrying block, and at the same time to provide for the ready renewal of the sandpaper upon the said block.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure I is a side View of my improved sandpapering-machine. Fig. 2 is an end view thereof; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail sectional View, the view being taken on line so a: of Fig. 1.
In constructing the machine forming the subject-matter of this application I provide standards 10, which support a table 11 and a driving-shaft 12, said drivingshaft being provided with crank- disks 13 and 13 and with fast and loose pulleys 14 and 15. Near the upper portion of each of the standards 10, I arrange guideways 16, in which there are mounted slides 17, said slides being provided with wrist-pins 18, that are engaged by conmeeting-rods 19, said rods in turn engaging other wrist-pins 20, that are carried by the crank arms or disks 13, the arrangement being such that as the driving-shaft 12 is revolved a reciprocating motion will be imparted to the slides 17. Each of the slides carry an outwardly-extending projection 21, and to these projections 21 are connected upwardly-extending stems 22, the stems being held to the projections 21 by set-screws 23. The stems 22 carry cases 24, such cases being formed with outwardly-extending flanges 25, and to the flanges 25,1 clamp blocks 26 by means of thumb-nuts a, that engage bolts 1), said blocks being of any desired form in cross-section, and in operation being covered by a strip of sand-paper 27, the inner end of said strip being coiled about the stem 22, as represented in Fig. 3.
In order that the upper ends of the stems 22 may be properly guided and supported, I connect a standard 30 to the table 11, and to the standard 30, I connect a double arm 31, formed with apertures adapted to receive the stems 22, as is clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be understood that the table 11 is apertured to provide for the passage of the cases 24.
In operation a rotary motion is imparted to the shaft 12, which motion, as before stated, will cause a reciprocation of the slides 17, and this reciprocating motion of the slides will cause a reciprocation of the stems 22 and, with the stems, of the sand-paper-covcred blocks 26. Then the material to be operated upon, which is usually scroll-work, is placed upon the table and pressed against the sandpaper carried by the blocks, as will be readily understood.
The machine, being a double one, may be used by two operators at the same time.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a sandpapering-machine, the combination, with a table, of slides, means for reciprocating the slides, stems connected to the slides, means for guiding the upper ends of the stems, cases carried by the stems, and sand-paper-carrying blocks connected to the cases, substantially as described.
2. In a sandpapering-machine, the combination, with a case and a means for reciprocating the same, of a strip of sand-paper partially housed within the case, a block over which the sand-paper is arranged to pass, and a means for connecting the block to the case, substantially as described.
3. In a sandpapering-machine, the combination, with a hollow case provided with an outwardly-extending flange, of blocks secured to the said flanges and adapted to be covered with sand-paper, the inner end of the paper being coiled in the case, substantially as described. 1
