AGRICULTURAL BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 110,414,088, dated October 29, 1889.
Application filed July 26, 1889. Serial No. 318,967. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HOSEA B. STAFFORD and HENRY IV. SALZ, citizens of the United States of America, residing at Manson, in the county of Calhoun and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Agricultural Boilers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Our invention relates to agricultural boilers; and it consists in the improved construction hereinafter described and set forth, whereby a simple and eflicient boiler is provided, that will be of comparatively light structure and capable of being conveniently detached in sections for transportation and storage.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a front vertical elevation of an agricultural boiler embodying our improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the same, and Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base.
The base A is formed by an annular casting provided with a central opening and having an annular flange b, by which said casting may be supported, and forming an ashpit, to which access may be had through an opening 0, formed in said flange. The upper plate of the base is provided adjacent to its central opening with notches d, which are located diametrically opposite to each other, as shown. The said notches are adapted to receive and form bearings for a circular grate B, provided with side lugs e, to engage said notches. An ear f, located on one side of said grate, is adapted to contact with the adjacent edge of the base-section and prevent the grate from turning completely on its pivots. The vertical extended rods 0 each has its lower end permanently secured to the upper plate of the base-section, while its upper end 9 is screw-threaded.
The fire-box E is cast in a separate piece and is of annular form, tapering toward the bottom. The upper end of said firebox is of such diameter that when in position it will keep the rods C spread to the desired extent.
The lower contracted end of said fire-box is of such diameter that in resting upon the base the lower edge of the fire-box will span the notches in which the grate-lugs lie, and thereby retain said lugs in said notches. The front of said fire-box is provided with an opening F, adapted to register with the door'opening in the outer casing to be described.
G refers to the outer casing, which consists of a vertical cylinder, the lower end of which rests on the base A, a marginal flange g on the upper side of the latter retaining it in position on the base. The side of the base is provided with the door-opening previously alluded to, on either side of which are located outer flanges h, which serve as guides for a vertically-sliding door 1', the upper edge of which is turned to form an operating-handle. The top of the boiler is formed by a circular plate H, which has a marginal depending flange j, to embrace the upper edge of the cyl inder, and is provided with a central flanged perforation 70 for the attachment of the fluepipe thereto. This top plate is provided with a series of pipes Z on n, which pierce the said top plate and are permanently connected thereto, so as to depend from the under side and suspend a vertical boiler within the casing. All of the pipes Z on 7?. project beyond said top, and the pipe Z has attached thereto a safety-valve 0, While the pipes m a carry couplingsectio11s, to which other pipe-com nections may be attached. The said suspended boiler consists of upper and lower sections I J, respectively, provided with a curved head and bottom, and the inner adjacent edges of said sections I J have flanges P at their ad- 3' acent edges, which are connected together by bolts to secure the sections together. The lower section J has two laterally-proj ecting pipes q r, whilathe upper has a single lateral pipe 3. The main casing has openings, through which connections may be made with said lat eral pipes. The connection with the lower pipe q provides for the attachment of ablowoff cock, while the two upper pipes r 8 provide for the attachment of pet valves to indi cate the depth of the water in the boiler. The top plate is perforated for the passage of the threaded ends of the Vertical rods, which are locked thereto by clamp-nuts.
The operation of the device will be obvious.
Water is introduced into the boiler by either of the connections seated in the top plate, while the other connection serves to lead the steam to any suitable point. The boiler proper is suspended from its top Within the'cylinder, and this arrangement prevents the suspending means from burning out, as is incident to other arrangements.
It will be noticed that the device comprises comparatively few parts, and may be readily erected and detached, as previously recited.
The arrangement of the connecting-rods avoids the necessity for employing other means for securing the casing to the base, While they also serve to maintain the fire-box, suspended boiler, and top plate in proper position.
We claim- 1. The combination, in an agricultural boiler, of a base-casting suspended upon a flange forming an ash-pit, and centrally perforated and notched, as described, of a grate having lugs to engage said notches, and an independent fire-box resting on said base and spanning said notches, substantially as set forth.
2. The combination, in an agricultural boiler, of a base having a grate-opening and grate mounted thereon, a casing secured to said base by vertical internal rods secured to said base, and an independent fire-box resting on said base and positioned by said rods, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination, in an agricultural boiler, of a base having a grate-opening, a vertical cylindrical casing supported thereon, a top plate, and vertical rods internally securing said casing to said base, and a boiler sus pended from the top plate, substantially as set forth.
4. The combination, in an agricultural boiler, of a base and cylindrical casing mounted thereon, a top plate, and vertical rods secur ing the plate and casing to said base, and a fire-box and suspended boiler positioned by said rods, substantially as set forth.
7 In testimonywhereof We affix our signatures in presence of two Witnesses.
