uVIRGrIL W. BLANCHARD, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH DAVIS, OF SAME PLACE.
SLIDEWAY FOR' CROSS-HEADS.
srnciricazrIoN-forming par@V of Letters Patent No. 41e,9o4., dated october 29, i889.
l Application iiled April 9, 1889. ASerial No. 306,532. (No model.)
.T0 all whom it may concern.: Y
Be it known that I, VIRGIL W. BLANCHARD, of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slideways for the Cross-Heads of Steam-Engines and I- do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure l s a cross-section through a modifled construction of a slideway, indicating in dotted lines a cross-head and the end of apistonrod applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same.v Fig. 3 is cross-section through the slideways and crosshead of steam-en gine. Fig. 4 is a' reduced plan View thereof.
The object of this invention is to adjust the cross-heads of a steamcylinder pistonrod so that the piston will not wear the cylinder; and it consists in means, which will be hereinafter explained, for eifecting the object in view. Before describing my present invention I will state that I have fully set forth in another application for an improved steamengine, filed April 9, 1889, Serial No. 306,536, means for sustaining a piston outside of the cylinder-heads, and therefore my present 1nvention relates simply to the means for adjusting the cross-heads to which the pistonrod is attached.
Referring by letter to the drawings, Figs.
2 and 3,A designates the support of the slide-V ways, and having angular side cheeks A A on which rest the angular slideways B B.v
These slideways are slotted transversely at the bottom, as at b, and in these slots lie angular gibs C O, the outer ends of which pass through openings in the cheeks A and are screw-threaded and provided with adjusting and locking nutsl C C', as shown. By this means the slideways can be vertically adjusted. The slideways B are vertically* slotted, as at D 1)inL their outer faces and at points intermediate between slots b, said slots being T-shaped in-oross-section, and in these slots engage the enlarged heads ot bolts E, the threaded ends of which pass through openings in the sides of cheeks A and are proslideways B by bolts g, and which prevent vertical movement of the cross-head H on said ways. The slideways can be vertically adjusted independently of eachother by gibs C O, and when so adjusted securely locked in position by the bolts E and F, as described.
In Figs. l and 2, H designates slideways I which are rectangular pieces of iron adapted to receivev a cross-head. These slideways are slotted or recessed at b and g, and they receive screw-bolts which have a head on one end and a nut on the other, and which are tappedthrough one of the cheeks I of the support I.
The slideways H are supported upon a gib which is longitudinally adjustable and which is preferably adjusted by means of a nut m. The upper portion of this gib or wedge is horizontal to the slideways I-I H, and the gib is locked by means of screw-bolts I. L.
It will be observed from what I have above described that the slideways are adjustable horizontally and vertically, the obj ect of which is to center the piston-rod; also, that by-my invention I am able to adjust a piston-rod both vertically and horizontally, and thereby keep the center of the piston in exact coincidence with the axis of the cylinder of the engine.
`Having described my invention, what I vclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. Slideways for a cross-head of an engine, which are adjustable vertically and horizontally, substantially as described.
2. 'Ihe combination of the frame, the verti- 7. The combination of the support having angular cheeks, the slideways B, supported thereon and slotted substantially as described, with the gibs C and the locking bolts and nuts, all substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I aiiix my signature in presence of zo two witnesses.
VIRGIL lV. BLANCHARD.
