SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,665, dated October 29, 1889. I
, Application filed July 22, 1889- a 1'0 all whom it may cancernk greatly strengthened andmore v as will enable others 10 Be it known that I, LOUIS HUENKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bremen, in the county of Auglaize and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful- Improvements in Cream-Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofthe invention, such' skilled in the art to which it ,appertains to make and use the same. b
This invention relates to improvements in air-tight metallic cans for holding cream; and it has for its object to simplify, improve, and cheapen the cost of construction over existing patents, and at the same time produce a light and convenient can that will keep the cream cool and preserve the same fresh and sweet.
To this end the invention consists inthe novel construction and arrangement of. the several parts, as will be hereinafter more particularly described, and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, to which reference is had, and which fully illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved can, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Referring to the drawings, A indicates the body of the can, which is preferably cylindrical, but may be of any suitable form. Secured and located near the top of this can is an annular water-holding chamber B, having an outwardly-projecting upper flange b and a bottom I) and angular or inclined re enforcing braces 0, located within said chamber, the ends of which are secured to the body A and chamber B, respectively. By means of these braces C the chamber B is securely held around the body of the can. At the same time any weight or strain that should come against the outer flange or rim of the chamber that would bend in the same this can ordinarily is enabled to resist and maintain its normal position.

of which is bent down or secured at an angle to the cone, forming an annular flange d, the lower edge of which contacts with and rests lightly upon the angular braces O, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings. Secured to the apex of this cone-shaped cover is a short tube E, open both at its upper and lower ends. Over the upper end of the tube is secured a stationary screw-threaded cap-seat e, upon which a correspondingly screw- F is screwed to close or open this end of the tube, the object of which is to admit air for the purpose of giving ventilation to the contents of the can quired.
A suitable cream-gage G is secured to the can, by which the inches of cream in the can are ascertained without measuring or weighing the cream. By this device the number of inches of cream is easlly told, and by it the cream is bought, a certain price being paid per inch by all cream dealers, and settlement is made according to the indicator.
A great advantage in the construction of my cream-can is the annular chamber surrounding it and the lidthereon, in which water is poured in the former to make it airtight, so as to keep the cream sweet and cool, and in order to make them so the diflferent kinds of cans at present used are placed in water so deep that the water covers the lower edge of the lid, and all persons are required to have a trough when needed to keep the cream cool. In different seasons of the year it is better for the cream not to stand in Water; but in order to keep it air-tight it has to be placed in water for that purpose.
My improved can can be placed anywhere on the floor in the cellar or above ground, and by pouring water enough in the chamwhen reber to cover the lower edge of the lid the cream is kept clean, sweet, and fresh until disposed of.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
