UNITEDA STATES` PATENT OFFICE.
PETER LIGHTNER, OF LANDISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
FENCE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,258, dated October 22, 1889.
Application led anuary 21, 1889. Serial No. 296,984. (No model.)
' To all whom t may concern.-
d erence being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to fences; and it consists in the construction and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth.
Figure l is a perspective view of a fencepanel, showing broken rails of connecting panels. Fig. 2 is a brokenend View of top of posts.
A A indicate fence-posts, preferably rectangular, which are preferably sharpened at their lower ends so as to enter the ground a little Way. Longitudinal rails B B are nailed to these posts, the rails of apanel being nailed orotherwise secured to the front of one post and to the rear of the other.
The tops of posts A are beveled, as at C, and the top rail near the post is also beveled, as at D, to form a continuation of the bevel of the top of the post,
Cross-stakes E E, pivot-ed together at F, are placed astraddle of the posts, so as to each have a bearing at their .junction on the beveled upper end of the single post and also the top rails. These stakes are nailed to the posts and, if desired, to the top rails. Thecross-stakes E E form support for riders K, which riders rest in the fork of the cross-stakes, as usual in stake-and-rider fences. The riders may be bound together by a wire or otherwise below the top rail, if deemed advisable.
It will be seen that this fence is verysiinple in construction. It Vis also very strong and stands very irlnly.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A panel-and-rider fence, each panel havii'rg a single post at each end, said posts connected by stringers, the top of these posts being beveled, and to each post a pair of cross-stakes, both bearing at their juncture on the beveled top of the posts, and riders resting in the crotch of the cross-stakes, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afX my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
