IMPROVEMENT l N FENCES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 219,406, dated September 9, 1879; application filed April 30, 1879.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, RICHARD M. V. LOVINS, of Majority Point, Cumberland county, Illinois, have invented Improvements in Fences, of which the following is the specification,

My invention is an improvement in fences, fully described hereinafter, whereby the posts which support the rails are preserved from the efl'ects of the Weather and securely maintained in place.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section of my improved fence. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of part of a fence 5 Fig. 3, a plan, in section, on the line 1 2, Fig. 1; and Fig. 4, a diagram.

The fence consists, mainly, of rails ca, parallel posts I) b, diagonals c, and stringers d. The posts 11 and rails a are arranged in the ordinary manner. To each pair of uprights b b is fitted a clamp-cap, A, consisting of a block of wood cut away at the center to form jaws i i, which, when the clamp is in position shown in Fig. l, prevent the post from spreadinglaterally, clamping them against the rails a.

One of themain uses of the clamp is to cover the ends of the post I), which, when exposed, afford a lodgment for snow and permit the rain and moisture to penetrate between the fibers of the wood, causing the rapid rotting of the latter.

Upon the clamps are laid the rails a, which afford bearings for the diagonals c, and cause the latter to cross at such a distance above the rails a that the stringer d is elevatedmuch farther than usual, thus insuring a higher fence without any additional rails, for the rails a may generally be a portion of those generally used in making up the panel.

An economical mode of constructing the fence is to split a single post along the line ac, Fig. 4, forming the two triangular bars b b, which are placed with their fiat sides againstthe rails, as shown in Figs. 2 and S, and the clamp may be cut to form parallel shoulders 31 3 Fig. 3, which bear against the outer sides of the rails, as shown.

When thusconstructed and arranged the diagonals 0, bearing against the sides of the clamp, tend to force it against the inclined faces of the postsand clamp the latter against the rails. I

I claim as my invention 1. The combination of the rails to, posts I), diagonals c, and clamp A, provided with jaws i at the under side, and fitted to. and covering the tops of the posts, as set forth.

2. The triangular posts b, in combination with the clamp A, projecting beyond the posts and having inclined shoulders y beneath, and with the diagonals 0 bearing laterally against the extended ends of the clamp, as set forth.
