PATEN CHARLES E, HOUSE, OF CANTON, OHIO.
FIRE-TONGS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 413,183, dated October 22, 1889. Application filed March 18, 1889- Serial No. 803,751. (No model.)
To'aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that, 1, CHARLES E. HOUSE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Canton, county of Stark, State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fire-Tongs, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved article of manufacture; and it consists ina new and useful improvement in fire-tongs, comprising certain features of construction and combination of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and set forth in the claims.
Figure 1 of the accompanying drawings is a plan view of fire-tongs illustrating my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view comprising the several parts thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures of the drawings.
A represents an inverted-U frame, having at its central portion a tube or pipe portion B, the end portions 0 of said frame adapted for a pivotal connection with a tong-leg D, of the form substantially as shown in the drawings, said leg having at its foot portion E a plate F, pivotally secured thereto, as hereinafter explained. The upper portion of the leg D is pivotally secured to the end portions O of the U-frame, as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with an inwardly-projected arm G, having at its inner end portion an elongated aperture H. A hand-piece, as J, is provided having a horizontal portion K and a vertical stem portion L, at the base of which is prothe end portions of the arms G are pivotally secured, as shown in Fig. 1, the L portion of the handpiece J adapted to pass into the tube B, about which is placed a coil-spring N, the upper end resting against the U-frame, the other end on the base M of the hand-piece. The energy of the spring is exerted the hand-piece J and the arms Gdownwardly and the bottom or foot portion E of the legs D apart, as shown in Fig. 1. The plate F is pivotally secured to the foot portion of the downwardly to throw legs D. That the inner faces thereto may conform to the surface of lumps of coal or other articles that may be handled with the tongs, the plates may be provided with projecting teeth, as shown in this case, or without, if preferred.
To operate the tongs, the Uframe and the hand-piece J are grasped by the hand of the operator. The fingers, pressing the hand-piece toward the U -frame, will swing the arms G upwardly about their pivotal connection with frame U and foot portion of the legs inwardly, the plates F resting against the article to be lifted, and when the fingers embracing the hand-piece are relaxed the energy of the spring will reverse the movement of the parts and release the article grasped by the tongs.
Having thus fully described the nature and object of my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. As a new article of manufacture, a firetong consisting, essentially, of the frame A, legs, as D, pivotally secured thereto, arms G, projecting inwardly from said legs and loosely secured together at their end portions, and a spring interjacent said arms and frame, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, in fire-tongs, of the U- shaped frame-piece A, having a tubular portion B, a springN about said portion, legs D, pivotally secured to said frame, having inwardly-projected arms G, a handpiece J, having a horizontal portion K, and stem port-ion L, adapted to enter said tubular portions, piv otally secured to the end portion of said arms, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination, in fire-tongs, of the frame A, legs D, arms G, hand-piece J, spring N, and plates F, pivotally secured to the foot portion of said legs, substantially as described, and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand this 12th day of March, A. D. 1889.
CHARLES E. HOUSE.
