UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND C. WESTERVELT, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
SU LKY- PLOW.4
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters v:P8-tent No. 413,157, dated October 15, 1889.
Application led June 20, 1889. Serial No. 315,019. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND C. Wns'rnn- VELT, of South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Snlky-Plows; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow having my improved caster attachments applied. Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail front view of the front casting, showing its angular arm, the adjustable sleeve thereon, and the locking-spring. Fig. 4 is a view of a modification, while Fig. 5 is a detail view.
This invention is an improvement in wheelplows; and its object is to provide simple and novel adjustable caster-wheels for the plow-beam, so that the plow can be carried bodily on the road and readily turned to or from the land side in plowing, all of which will be hereinafter explained.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates an ordinary plow having a draftbeam a projecting in rear of the plow proper.
B is an ordinary turn-plow secured to said beam. b is a bar projecting from beam a on the landside of the plow and braced by rods or bars b b', as indicated, and on its outer end is a wheel a', as shown.
C designates cast-ings, each having a vertical sleeve C at one end and a segment c at the other. One o'f these cast-ings is attached to the beam on the mold side by suitable bolts in rear of plow B, and the other casting is secured to the front end of the beam on the land side of the plow.
D designates levers pivoted on castings C, having hand-latches d engaging the segments c. To the short arms of said levers are pivoted one end of links E E, the other ends of which are-respectively connected to the upper ends of vertical rods F and I-I, respectively engaging the sleeve of the front and rear casting. Rod F has a collar f on its upper end, to which the end of its link E is connected, allowing said rod to turn freely in its sleeve. On rod F, below the casting,
is secured a collar G by means of a set-screw, and this collar has a lug g on its upper face, adapted to engage a notch in the lower edge of sleeve C, and thus lock rod F and prevent its turning. The collar G regulates the amount of rising of rod F through sleeve C', while by means of lever D and its attachments the rod can be depressed and so retained, as is evident. While' so depressed, the collar Gr, being disengaged from the sleeve, the rod is free to turn.
D designates a caster-wheel secured to the lower end of rod F and adjusted thereby.
Rod II is preferably angular in cross-sec tion to prevent its turning in its sleeve on the front casting, and its lower end is bent outward beneath beam a, giving bar H an L shape, and on the horizontal portion of said bar is adjustably secured a sleeve I, having a depen ding cylindrical stud '1l at one end, to which stud is secured the arm of a casterwheel J, as shown, so that the caster-wheel can turn thereon. The upper end of said arm is hanged, as at j, and this flange is notched at j vK designates a latch sliding in slotted lugs t', depending from sleeve I and controlled by a spring k. This latch is adapted to engage the notches j of the caster-wheel arm, and thereby lock the wheel. To the latch is attached a cord or chain K', the end of which is carried bac-k to a convenient position for engagement by the driver, thus enabling the driver to disengage the latch and wheel, permitting the latter to turn beneath the beam. In place of the depending stud i of sleeve I, the end of rod H might be bent downward, as indicated at h, Fig. 4, and the caster engaged thereon, the sleeve being used to support the latch, as described. I, however, prefer the first-described construction, as by itl can readily set the front caster farther in or out or below the beam. It is apparent that I can readily elevate or depress either front or rear caster-wheel and can adj ust them to different heights. By forcing down rod F, I can elevate the rear of the plow, throwing it upon its point, and while in such position a turn can be readily made either rightor left without. injury to the mold-board or landside of the plow. By turning collar G to different positions on rod F the caster D can be IOO turned in such position that it will gather to or from the landside. The two caster-wheels can be lowered suiciently to lift the plow above the surface of the ground and throw part of its Weight on wheel a for transportation..
Having described my invention, I claim- 1. The combination of the casting formed with a sleeve and segment, the lever pivoted thereon and vertical rod playing through said sleeve having a bent lower end, and the' lever connecting said rod, with a sleeve on the lower end of said rod, the latch carried thereby, and the caster-wlelaTlSs-tl tially as specified.
2. The combination of the casting', the vertically-movable rod, and the levers and link for operating said rod, with the adjustable sleeve on the lower end of the rod having a depending stud, and a caster-wheel attached to said stud, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination of theplow, itsside wh cel, and adjustable rear caster-wheel, with the casting secured to the front end ofthe beam, having a segment and sleeve formed integral therewith, a vertical rod playing through said sleeve, having a bent lower end, the lever pivoted to said casting, the link connecting said lever and rod, the sleeve on the bent lower end of said rod having a depending stud, the caster-wheel suspended on said stud having a lianged and notched arm, a1 ire 1f-controlled latch on said sleeve engagi r said arm7 al constiicted and arranged to operate as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses. EDMUND C. WES'IERVELT. Vitnesses:
JAMES DUSHANE. W. G. CRoBrLL.
