SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,855, dated October 15, 1889.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES LEACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Benkleman, in the county of Dundy and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Screw-Cutting Dies, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in screw-cutting dies; and it consists in the peculiar construction and arrangement of parts that will be more fully set forth hereinafter, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The object of my invention is to provide a screw-cutting die which is adapted to permit the ready escape of the shavings as fast as they are formed, and thereby prevent the shavings from accumulating between the cutting-edges of the die and the screw on which it is working, and thus avoid injury to the die and to the threads of the screw.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a screw-cutting die embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line a: m of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a perspective View of a modified form of my invention.
A represents the die, which is made substantially in the form of the letter U, and is thereby provided with the arms B. The said arms are slightly inclined in opposite direc; tions, so that their outer ends approach each other, and between the said ends of the arms, in the opposing sides thereof, are formed the threaded cutting-dies C. From the rear end of the body of the die, and in line with the major axis thereof, projects an extension I), which may be square, hexagonal, or of any other preferred shape and arranged longitudinally through the said extension and through the outer end of the body of the die, and in line with the threaded portion C, between the ends of the arms, is an opening E. The space between the inner ends of the arms in rear of the threaded die 0 is enlarged to form an opening F, which is ovoidal in shape.
G represents a cross-bar, which is provided with the central opening of the same size and configuration as the extension D of the die body and adapted to receive the said extension D. The ends of the said cross-bar G are provided with ratchet-shaped teeth H, and said cross-bar is adapted to be secured in the centering-chuck of a lathe so as to arrange the body of the die concentrically with the spindle of the lathe.
The operation of my invention is as follows: The rod or bolt to be threaded is fed to the die in the usual manner, and as the die rotates the threaded portion C thereof, by impinging on the sides of said bolt or rod, serves to cut screw-threads thereon, as will be very readily understood. As the end of the bolt or rod passes through the threaded portion C of the guide, the shavings which are cut by the die fall through the opening F, and are thus prevented from accumulating on the bolt or rod, and hence cannot injure the thread thereof nor bind between the same and the cuttingedges of the die. As the bolt or rod continues to advance through the die, it enters the opening E and passes through the same, said opening forming a guide for the bolt or rod, as will be readily understood. In some instances the die will be rigidly secured in position and the bolt or rod rotated and fed to the die, as will be readily understood by persons skilled in the art, and the invention will be found to be equally efiective when operated in this manner. The die is also adapted to be operated by hand, in which case the bar II and the bar G will be taken from the lathe together with the die, and said bar will serve as a convenient handle, by means of which the die may be grasped and rotated.
In Fig. 5 I illustrate a modified form of my invention, in which the arms of the die have transverse plates projecting beyond opposite sides of the die. Threaded cutting-dies K are formed between the opposing edges of the plates on opposite sides of the arms. In operation the ends of the rods on which the threads are being out after passing through the dies K pass along the sides of the arms and can be cut in any desired lengths.
Having thus described my invent-ion, I claim- 1. The die having the central bore and provided with the integral arms B, and having the threaded portion 0 formed between the opposing outer ends of said arms, substantially as described.
2. The die having the central bore, the integral arms B, inclined toward each other and 5 having the opening F between them, and the extension D, formed at the top and adapted to be engaged by the bar G, substantially as described.
3. The die-body hating the arms 13, pro- 1o Vided with the threaded portion 0 011 their opposing sides at their outer ends, said diebody having the opening F'between the arms B, and the bore or opening E in line with the threaded portion C, substantially as described.
