Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
DANIEL H. TALBOT, OF SIOUX CITY, IOWA.
CATTLE-TAG.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 412,431, dated October 8, 1889.
Application filed February 7, 1889. Serial No. 299,034. (No model.)
l Button for Tagging Cattle, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to an improved button for tagging cattle, and has for its object to provide a device simple in construction and capable of expeditious and convenient application;
and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth,r and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar gures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 of the drawings illustrates the application of the button to Athe ear of cattle. Fig. 2 is a transverse section through the button detached. Fig. 3 is a transverse section through the button, illustrating the same in position upon the ear; and Figs. 4 and 5 are face views of the several sections of the button.
In carrying out the invention the button is made in two sections 10 and 11, and from any suitable malleable material best adapted to heal the cut iiesh. The section 10 of the button is struck up or otherwise formed from a metal blank preferably to the contour of a disk, as shown in Fig. 4, which disk is provided with a central tubular shank 12, having a shoulder 13 formed thereon near it-s inter# section with the disk, as best illustrated to the left in Fig. 2. The section 11 is also in the form of a disk, the center of the disk being apertured and the walls of the aperture iiared inwardly to form an integral sleeve 14,which sleeve is adapted to slide over the shank 12 of the button-section 10.
In aring the walls of the aperture in the button-section 11 the outer face surrounding the aperture is essentially countersunk, as best illustrated at 15 in Fig. 5.
In operation, when the animal is caught, a hole is punched in the ear and the tubular shank of the button section 10 is passed through the opening thus formed. The other section 11 is then passed over the projecting end of the shank 12 preferably to a contact with the shoulder 13, and the free end of the shank is flared outward to a contact with the countersunk surface of the said button-section 11, as illustrated in Fig. 3, whereby the two sections are Iirmly bound together, thus avoiding loss of the button.
Upon the outer face of the button the naine of the owner or of the animal, or the number or locality, if necessary, may be produced.
lf in practice it is found desirable, the button may be Inadevoblong or rectangular, and may be provided with two or more spaced shanks. A
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- A cattle-tag formed in two sections, each having an integral tube or sleeve, one tube or sleeve having a reduced portion adapted to'enter and be upset in the other sleeve or tube, and formed at the inner end of said reduced portion with an annular stop-shoulder for the inner end of said second or outer tube or sleeve to abut, the joint between the two sleeves being at about the center of the button when the two sections are secured in place on the animal, substantially as set forth.
DANIEL l-I. TALBOT.
