JEREMIAH C. CHAMBERLAIN, OF CHELSEA, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE SAIVYER CRYSTAL BLUE COMPANY, OF SACO, MAINE.
BOTTLE FOR LIQUID BLUING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent 170412366, dated October 8, 1889. Application filed July 16, 1388. Serial No. 230,127- (No model.)
To ail whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JEREMIAH C. CHAMBER- LAIN, of the city of Chelsea, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bottles for Liquid Bluing, &c., of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved bot tle or package to be used for containing liquid bluing, ink, and other liquids or substances which it is desirable to put up in packages for convenience, storage, exhibition, transportation, sale, and use, and in which they will not deteriorate by evaporation or other cause. In the production of such packages cheapncss and strength, combined with lightness and non -liability to fracture, are most desirable elements, and it is to the end of producing a bottle or package practically combining all the essentials above named that this invention pertains.
The improved bottle and package of this invention consists, in substance, of a body of cylindrical shape made of paper-board 2 5 or such like material and having notches at its opposite ends, and heads or ends to said body made of sheet metal, and each head grooved or channeled to receive the notched ends and having a flange to surround the outside of the body, and the whole lined with a cement of a resinous orbituminous nature, or such like, filling said notches and grooves and securing the body and heads together, and all otherwise substantially as hereinafter described.
In the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a central vertical section of the improved bottle or package, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the top head removed.
In the drawings, A is the body, and B and C are the opposite ends or heads thereto. The body A is made of pasteboard or other such like material, and is of a cylindrical or other suitable shape, and is open at each end, and there receives the ends or heads B C. The heads B C are made of sheet metal, and each is stamped out into the proper shape and with a groove or channel a, to receive the open ends of the body, and a flange b, to surround and preferably tightly fit about the outside of the body. I
The body A at each end has notches (Z,
making channels of communication between the heads and the bottoms of the grooves of the heads, and which receive the ends or 5 5 heads.
The head B has a short central dischargetube D, preferably in one piece therewith, and this tube D has a cap E closing it, perforated at c, and these perforations closed by an inner layer f, of paper or other such like material, which is secured against the inner side of the cap and between it and the inwardly-projecting flange or ring g. This ring g is made of metal and separate from the discharge-tube D, and its external diameter is such that it can be inserted in and tightly fit and be confined by the Walls of the tube. This flange 9 forms a sealingsurface to which the paper layer can be ce- 7o mented, and thus it can be the better secured to the cap.
The bottle described is to be lined, as at h, with resinous or other bituminous cement or suitable material to render it impervious to moisture and to the evaporation or other deterioration of its contents, and this cement as applied serves to unite body and head together, the union being still inore insured by the running of the cement. into and through the notches d of the ends of the body and between theends and the bottoms of the grooves.
The bottle or package described obviously embraces all the essentials stated.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
1. A bottle or package for liquid bluing, & c., composed of a body A, made of paper board, having notches dat its ends, heads B C, made of sheet metal and each having a groove a, to receive the ends, and a flange b, to surround the outside of the body, and a lining h, of resinous or othcrbituminous cem- 9 5 cut, filling said notches (Z and grooves a, substantially as describedfior the purpose specifled.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 0 my hand in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
J. o'. CHAMBERLAIN.
