UNITED STATES PATENT Fries.
ALBERT J. DOTY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR, BY MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE GOODWIN GAS STOVE AND METER COMPANY, OF
SAME PLACE.
GAS-STOVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,649, dated'september 24:, 1889.
Application filed June 6, 1887. Serial No. 240,423. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALBERT J. DOTY, of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Gas-Stove, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the annexed drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side sectional elevation of my :0 improved gas-stove, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the heat-distributing plate.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
The object of my invention is to provide means for distributing the heat of a gas or other flame over different parts of a large surface, so as to secure an even temperature throughout by means of a single burner.
My invention consists in an auxiliary plate applied to the under surface of a griddle and provided upon its upper surface near its periphery with ribs arranged to touch the back of the griddle and communicate heat to the griddle near its outer edge by the contact 2 5 with such ribs.
It also consists in placing upon the center of the plate and between it and the griddle a non-conductor of heat, which will prevent the overheating of the center of the griddle.
The body A, supported upon feet a, is provided with a conically-concaved plate B at the top thereof, having a central aperture 0. The edge of the body A projects above the periphery of the plate B and is notched to permit of the escape of the products of combustion between the notches and the edge of the griddle D, supported by the said notched edge of the body. The griddle D has aplane lower surface, to which is clamped a conical 40 concave plate E, provided with radial ribs 0 near its periphery, having plane upper edges which contact with the under surface of the griddle D. The plate E is held in its position against the under surface of the griddle by 5 screws d, passing through the said plate and into internally-threaded bosses e on the under surface of the griddle. On the central portion of the plate E is placed a quantity of heat-insulating material csuch as asbestus or fire-claywhich extends nearly to the inner ends of the ribs 0.
Below the center of the griddle D and plate E is arranged the opening of an ordinary heating-burner F, the said burner being supported by the side of the body A and receiving its gas through an orifice f and its air through an opening g in the bottom of the burner-tube in the usual way. The flame issuing from the end of the burner strikes the central part of the conically-concavc plate E 6c upon its lower or convexsurface and follows the said plate outward toward the periphery of the body A and griddle D, communicating its heat to the plate. The central portion of the plate E, which is subjected to the strongest heat, is prevented from imparting heat to the center of the griddle D by the insulating material 0, while the heat is conducted by the plate E to the ribs 0 and by the said ribs to the griddle D. If the flame is too small to reach to the periphery of the griddle, the heat thereof will be carried forward by the products of combustion and by the heated air entering the opening G of the plate B. The ribs 0 are arranged in series, the ribs being farther apart in the inner series than they are in the series next beyond, the ribs in each series increasing in number toward the periphery of the plate E, so as to more thoroughly communicate the heat to the outer So edge of the griddle.
By means of my improvementl am enabled to distribute the heat of a single burner uniformly over the entire surface of the griddle.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The combination and arrangement, with the burner F, of the following parts, viz: the concave deflecting-plate B, having a central go opening arranged above said burner, a conical heat-distributing plate E,'supported above the deflectingplate B and provided on its upper surface with radial ribs 0, a griddleD, secured to said plate E in such manner that 5' the said radial ribs of the latter will contact with the under surface of the former, and a body or stand A, provided with an annular notched edge or riln extending vertically above the periphery of the plate B, supported Within said body A, said parts being constructed, combined, and arranged as aforesaid in order that the flame may be directed outward through the draft-passage between the plates B and E and find its exit through the notched edges of the rim of the body A of the device, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination, with the griddle D and a burner F, of a concave plate E, located centrally above said burner F and provided with ribs 0, contacting with the under surface of the griddle, and heat-insulating material 0', applied to the central portion of the plate E,- substantially as set forth.
ALBERT J. DOTY.
