HAMMER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,633, dated September 24, 1889.

` following is a specification.

The object of my invention is to provide a hammer adapted to carry a tack, nail, or other similar attaching device, and to place it in position ready to be driven into any desired object.

My invention is especially designed for at-A taching advertisements to a wall, fence, or board and for attaching canvas, paper, cloth, or other material to ceilings.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a view showing my improved hammer and its handle with the tacks in position in their seats, and showing also the manner of attaching an advertisement by the use of my improved hammer. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one form of my improved hammer in which Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a hammer having a square head with my improvements applied.

As shown in Fig. 2, the hammer-head A is made cylindrical and mounted on the end of a handle B. In the upper end of thehammerhead are formed one or more-preferably several, as shown-T-shaped recesses a for holding tacks or nails.

As shown in Fig. 2, several recesses are formed in the hammer-head at equal distances apart and at equal distances from the handle of the hammer. On the upper face of the hammer-head the recesses are made of sufficient length and breadth to accommodate the head of the tack, nail, or similar device. This part of the recess is marked l in the drawings. The part l of the recess connects with the upper portion 2 in the side of the head. The part l of the recess a extends below the end of the part 2 of the recess and is of the same width all the Way down, so that when the tack or nail is inserted in the recess the head will extend down into the part l of the recess, while the shank; extends through the part 2. The part 2 of the recess tapers from its upper end downwardly, so that the shank of thetack or nail will be clamped and held in position when inserted. Then a small tack or nail is used, the shank next to the head will rest on the end wall of the recess 2 and the head will lie in the recess l and eX- tend into said recess below the end Wall of the recess 2, so that the tack is held straight and may be more readily placed in position to be driven home.

I have shown the recesses formed so as to hold the tacks or nails both vertically and horizontally. When the tacks or nails are held vertically, they are in position to be driven into a ceiling. lVhen they are held horizontally, they are in position to be driven into a side Wall.

At IJ I have shown the recess l for the head of the tack or nail in the side of the hammerhead, the recess 2 extending to the top. At a the recess l is formed in the top of the hammer-head and the recess 2 extends along the side. Similar recesses are formed in the bottom or end of the hammer-head, as shown.

By means of a long handle, as shown in Fig. l, the tacks may be elevated to the desired position, may be inserted in place, and then the hammer may be Withdrawn from the tack and used to drive it in.

- In hanging np advertisements the card may be attached to the tack, and then the tackand advertisement elevated by the hammer to the desired object, and then the tack may be firmly driven in. The card may then be attached more iirmly by additional tacks, which may .be inserted and driven in afterward.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, an d desire to procure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
