LEDGER-INDEX DEVlCE.

SPEGIFTOATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,577, dated September 24, 1889.

I lets pivoted to a suitable frame and adapted to be thrown up or down, said tablets, which maybe composed of card-board, pasteboard, or other material suitably faced to form writing-surfaces on opposite sides, being lettered and otherwise marked to constitute a ledgerindex, which will serve to give the name and page corresponding with the ledger to which it is designed to be used as an accessory, and whereby the finding of any particular name and page in the ledger will be greatly facilitated, substantially as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.

, Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification,

in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the figures.

Figure 1 represents a view in perspective of aledger-index device embodying my inventiomshowing the several tablets as thrown up; and Fig. 2, a like view of the same with one of the tablets as thrown down.

A and B indicate the back and front of the frame which carries the tablet C, said frame being constructed to stand in an upright position upon a desk or elsewhere, and made to present an inclined front 13, in which the several tablets O are pivoted at their lower ends, one below the other, as at I), to admit of them being turned up or down somewhat after the fashion of the leaves of a book,

but presenting when turned up a series of projecting lapping upper ends or edges to make a proper separate exposure and to facilitate the handling of them. These tablets Q (of which seven are here shown) may be made of thick card-board or pasteboard faced with white paper on its opposite sides. Each of said tablets has a central dividing-line 0 down its opposite faces, and each of such divided spaces is marked with letters of the alphabet in its corners, the same being near the upper or free ends of the tablets on their one side or face and near the lower or pivoted ends thereof on their opposite side or face, with a paging-space, which may be marked Page, on each of said divided surface portions of the tablets. The letters in the corners of said divided surface portions of the tablets of course all differ one from the other, and form index-letters under which the names of the trades or parties in the regular or book ledger are Written, with the number. of the page, beneath where the word Page appears on the tablets, opposite said names and corresponding tothe same page on which such names are to be found in the ledger. Lines cl may be made across each face of the tablets to facilitate the entry of the names thereon, conforming as regards the initial letter to the alphabetically-lettered spaces of the tablets.

ith a ledger-index device thus constructed the place or page of entry in the ledger of any one or more names may be found in much less time and with far greater facility than hunting for the same in the regular index of the ledger, or than by turning over a large number of leaves in a cumbersome ledger, the tablets being exposed on both sides by simply turning them up or down, as desired.

The lettering of the tablets may include, if desired, capital letters for the surnames of the parties appearing on the index; also, the pivtits I) of the tablets, which may be rods extending across the tablets, may have their bearings at their one end in open-ended slots in one of the inclined side pieces 15, as shown in Fig. 1,to facilitate the placing and removal of the tablets when required, and may beheld in place in said slotted bearings by an adjustable or removable locking-rod g.

Having thus described my invention, what I- claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The within-described ledger-index device, consisting of a series of double-faced tabsloping front of an upright frame and alphabetically marked in the corners of their opposite spaced surfaces, said tablets being also provided with ledger-page spaces to correlets pivoted one below the other upon the IOO axial lines of their pivots into separate entry- IO spaces, and said spaces being differently alphabetically lettered in the upper corners of the opposite sides of the tablets, respectively, essentially as shown and described.
