Description
(No Model.) I
E. A. BILL.
SUSPENDER BUCKLE.
No. 411.101. Patented Sept. 17, 1889.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDWARD A. HILL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
SUSPENDER-BUCKLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 411,101, dated September 17, 1889.
Application filed May 13, 1889. $erial No. 310,510. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDWARD A. HILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Suspender-Buckles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and we act description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has relation to an improve ment in suspender-buckles; and the novelty will be fully understood from the following description and claims, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved buckle. Fig. 2 is a back view of the same. Fig. 3 is a front view of a modification, and Fig. 4 is a back View of the modification.
This buckle is composed of two hinged sectionsnamely, an upper section A and a lower section B. The upper section A is composed of a plate slotted transversely, as shown at a, for the passage of the web, and provided near its opposite longitudinal edge with lug-journals b, which may be formed integral by rolling short tabs of the metal upon itself to form eyes, although it is obvious that these journals may be fixed to the plate in anysuitable manner. The lower longitudinal edge of this plate is armed with teeth or holding means, which may be a part of the plate itself, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2; or the teeth may be formed on a separate piece and adapted to serve in a manner which will be presently explained. The lower section B is composed of wire bent in substantially rectangular form, as shown, and is bent about midway of its length to form a hook O, to receive the button-hole tabs of suspenders, such as are at present in use. This lower section has its branches terminating in upper horizontal portions d, which are designed to enter the lug eyes or journals 1) of the upper section and form ahinge-connection therewith. The lower transverse edge or toothed portion of the plate A is designed to extend sufficiently beyond the hinge-joint as to engage a bearing-plate or bar E, which is secured to the lower wire frame B, and this toothed portion may be given a slight bend outwardly and downwardly, so as to insure a firmer hold or fastening on the web. The bar or plate E is secured at opposite ends to the lateral portion of the wire frame B and so arranged on the said frame as to form a slot or passage F for the web, the slot or passage in the plate A being approximately in the same vertical plane as the passage F in the lower frame. This bar or bearing-plate E may in some cases be also secured to the lower transverse part of the frame B, as more fully shown in Fig. 1.
By reference to Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings it will be seen thatI omit the teeth from the lower edge of the plate A and journal on the upper cross portion of the frame B a toothed lever, which is formed from a separate piece and may have a movement independent from either of the hinged sections.
Having described my invention,what1 claim 1s 1. A suspender-buckle composed of an upper and lower section united byahinge-joint, the upper section being of sheet metal and provided with a slot audits lower edge armed with teeth, and the lower section formed from wire with a passage for the web and carrying a bearing-plate for the toothed plate to confine the web thereon, substantially as specified.
. 2. A suspender-buckle composed of an upper and a lower section hinged together, the lower section being formed from wire and provided with a bearing-plate, forming a passage for the web, and the upper section having a slot for the passage of the web and teeth journaled on the upper transverse portion of the lower frame, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDIVARD A. I-IILL. IVitnesses:
WM. HEALY, J11,
EDWARD B. LATHROP.
