- C. M. ORANDALL.
GAME 0R PUZZLE.
No. 410,956. Patented Sept. 10, 1889'.
I (fig 1% v A TTOBNE Y UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. CRANDALL, OF WVAVERLY, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO MOSES LYMAN, OF SAME PLACE.
GAME OR PUZZLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,956, dated September 10, 1889.
Application filed February 21, 1889- Serial No. $20,743. (No model.)
T0 41% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES M. ORANDALL, of \Vaverly, in the county of Tioga and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Games or Puzzles, of which I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in games or puzzles in which a person seeks to roll a number of marbles from one part of a board or table to another under particular conditions; and the invention consists of the apparatus herein described, constructed and operated as set forth.
In the accompanying sheet of drawings, Figure l is a side view of the apparatus with a cover applied thereto; Fig. 2, a like view with the cover removed. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the same; Fig. 4:, a vertical section in the plane so as, Fig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts in the several views.
The game or puzzle for which this apparatus is expressly designed is called Pigs in Clover. The pigs are represented by several marbles, and in one part of the board is located a pen, into which the person, or each of the persons, engaged with the game or puzzle strives to drive the pigs by inclining the board in the different directions in which he wishes the marbles to roll.
The board is composed of the base A, surrounded by the thin wall a, and having the pen 0 and the fences or partitions d d erected thereon. The base is of wood, and in its upper surface are turned or otherwise cutconcentric grooves, which are separated from one another by concentric spaces 6 e, &c.,through which the marbles can pass without hinderance, and in these grooves are tightly inserted the edges of pasteboard strips, which constitute the wall a andeircular fences d d.
The pen 0, at the center of the board, is provid ed'with a covering or roof, and through the wall of the pen and each of the fences d d is an opening or gate f, large enough to allow the marbles to pass freely through it, these openings being arranged alternately on diametricallyopposite sides of the center of the board, as shown in the drawings.
To operate the game or puzzle, the board is held in the hands, the marbles being placed in the outermost space a, and the person seeks by constantly changing the inclination of the board to make the marbles roll through the several gates and into the pen, the object be ing to get all of the marbles into the pen together.
Prior to my invention a game-board has been constructed in which a bed supported upon legs has been employed, said bed being provided with a series of arc-shaped fences arranged in concentric circles distant from each other to form passage-ways, in which passage-ways were located numerous studs or projections for deflecting or diverting the course of a top spinning therein. Such forms no part of my invention.
Having now described my invention, whatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination, in a game-board or puzzle adapted to be held in the hand, of a base having a continuous wall, a central pen, and a series of interior concentric fences, each of said fences having an opening arranged alternately on opposite sides, substantially as described.
2. A game-board or puzzle constructed to be held in the hand, having, in combination, a base provided with a continuous wall, a central pen, and a series of interior concentric fen ces, each of said fences being provided with an opening, which openings are out of line with each other, substantially as shown and described.
CHARLES M. CRANDALL.
In presence of L. J. BULEY, H. H. KIMELEY.
