UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LAUREgNA'E. BUCHANAN, OF WVACO, MISSOURI.
COMBINED DRESS STAY AND FASTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,954, dated. September 10, 1889.
Application filed February 25, 1889. $erial No. 301,065- (ModeL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LAURENA E. BUCHANAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Waco, in the county of Jasper and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Dress Stays and Fasteners; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
Myinvention relates to an improvement in combined dress stays and fasteners; and it consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts thereof, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of my invention is to provide a combined stay and fastener for the front of basques and waists of dresses, and one which may be readily attached and cheaply manufactured. I attain this object by the device illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 is a rear elevation of my device, showing the stays united, the buttons and wire being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a vertical section through the center of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the stays with the wire in place, and Fig. 4 is a cross-section on the line a: 00 of Fig. 3.
In the drawings, A represents strips of fabric having pockets a in their bottom edges, in which are placed suitable steels or stays B, they extending part way up the entire length of the strips. The strips are preferably made of strong material to resist considerable lateral strain.
At intervals on the adjacent edges of the steels are rigidly secured hooks and eyes D and D, and the arrangement of these hooks and eyes is continued up the entire length of the strips. The hooks and eyes used on the fabric are formed with sharp points which are forced through the fabric and clinched,
thus saving time and trouble in attaching the same. Those on the steels have guides D thereon.
To secure the but-tons in place and avoid the necessity of sewing, I employ a wire rod E, having a looped upper end, which I force down inside of the pocket through the eyes of the buttons which have been previously forced through the dress front and strip and through guides D. The lower end of this rod is forced into a pocket (Z, formed at the lower end of the steel. This prevents the rod from working down or wearing the fabric.
The buttons above the steels may be strung on a suitable cord, if desired.
The steels may be treated with any desirable solution to prevent their rusting.
The advantage gained by the above construction is that instead of sewing on the buttons and making button-holes, I take my strips and sew them on, which can be done in a very short time, thereby preventing the defacement of the dress and yet holding it securely in place or together, the steels preventing it from wrinkling.
It will also be noticed that my device may be put up in boxes, and is intended to be sold as an entire article.
I am aware that many minor changes in the construction and arrangement of the parts of my device can be made and substituted for those shown and described without in the least departing from the nature and principle of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination, with the strips of fabric A, of the steels B, one of which has hooks with guides D therein, and a pocket, as d, at its lower end, and the other provided with eyes, and the wire E, substantially as described.
In test-imony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LAURENA E. BUCHANAN.
