CAR-BRAKE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,874, dated September 10, 1889.
Application filed J une 15, 1889. Serial No. 314,406. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, HIRAM A. BUTTER- FIELD, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Car-Brakes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This car-brake is especially intended for use on cable lines of cars and will be described in this connection. By it the brake may be applied by means of a single lever (or a hand-wheel, if desired) to all the cars in a train, whether there are two or more.
Figure I is a bottom plan of a grip-car and a common car with my improved brake applied thereto. Fig. II is a detail side elevation of the brake-lever and equalizer; and Fig. III is a detail side elevation of the same, the supporting-bar being in section at III III, Fig-II. Figs. IV and V are respectively a side elevation and a perspective view illustrating modifications of the equalizer.
The sub-frame of a grip-car is shown at 1, and of an ordinary car at 2. At 3 are side rails or timbers, and at 4 end bars or timbers, and at 5 and 6 cross bars or timbers.
7 is the brake-lever, fulcrumed at S to a longitudinal bar 9, extending from timber 5 to timber 6. This lever has a usual dog 9, engaging on a ratchet-bar 10 and lifted by a bar 11, all in the usual way, the purpose being to keep the brakes applied when desired.
The equalizer, as shown in Figs. II and III, will first be described.
12 is an equalizer-bar pivoted at the middle 13 to the lever 7.
14 and 15 are rods connected to the ends of the equalizer. The rod 14 is connected to the end of a lever 16, working on a fulcrum 17 upon a strap 18, secured to the brakebar 19, carrying shoes 20, as usual.
21 is a rod connecting the other end of the lever 16 with one end of a similar lever 22, fulcrumed in a similar manner to the other brake-bar 23. The other end of the lever 22 is connected by a rod 24 to a fixed point, as the bar 5.
The rod 15 is connected to one end of a lever 25, fulcrumed at 26 to a fixed point,
and having rods 27 extending from its ends to the'ends of the car, where the rods are provided with hooks or eyes for attachment into a rod 28 upon the car 2, one or two links 29 being ordinarily used between the ends of the rods. There are upon the car two of the rods 28, one extending to each end, so
equal force be applied to each, and this will be so even if there is a little lost motion in the car-coupling, because the equalizer will adjust itself when needed. Of course the equalizer-bar may be made shorter at one end than at the other, so as to apply a greater amount of force to the brakes of either car.
Additional rods, as seen in broken lines at 35, may be applied to the car 2, so as to work the brakes on a third car, the rod 35, which extends backward, being coupled with the front rod 28 of such third car.
In Fig. IV a wire or other cord or cable 14 is shown in place of the rods 14 and 15 and a pulley 36 in place of the equalizer 12.
The operation of this device will be evident without special description, the ends of the cord being connected to the levers 16 and 25.
In the modification shown in Fig. V the equalizer 12 is connected to the lever by a link or bar 37.
I claim as my invention-- 1. The combination, in a car-brake, of a hand-lever and an equalizer carried thereby and connected with the brake systems of two cars, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the brake systems upon two cars, each system being substantially alike at both ends of the cars and the two systems adapted to couple together, and
a hand-lever with an equalizer connected. thereto, the equalizer being connected with 10 the systems of the two cars, respectively, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
