THlLL-COUPLING.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 410,849, dated September 10, 1889.

To 0. whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ANDREW J. OBRIsT, a citizen of the United States, of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Thin-Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form part of this specification.
My invention relates to tliill-couplings, and has for its object to provide a coupling consisting of few parts and that shall be convenient of coupling and uncoupling, with provision for effectually preventing rattle of the parts.
The invention consists in the parts and combination of parts, hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a complete coupling. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the same. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the thill-iron. Fig. 4 is an end view of a revoluble cylinder held within the draw-iron of the clip.
A designates the axle, to which is secured a clip B in the usual or any preferred manner.
O designates a 'draw-iron formed integral with and extending horizontally from the clipiron. Said iron is formed with a transverse circular opening D, extending through the entire width thereof, into which is placed a cylinder E, partially closed at each end and formed with a lug or projection F upon the outer side thereof centrally of the length of the cylinder.
Upon the upper side of the draw-iron O is formed a longitudinal slot G, there being a like slot H formed in the cylinder, the slot in the latter being through the ends and side, as shown in Fig. 4:- Each of the slots described is of a size to allow the insertion of a crossbar upon the thill-iron, as will be more fully explained.
J designates the thill-iron, formed with a strap K for attachment to the thill L, and at the lower end with bifurcated arms M, connected near the ends thereof by a cross-bar N. Bar N is preferably formed rectangular in cross-section, with the central portion of the same slightly reduced in area upon the front side by removing the corners therefrom, as shown at N, Figs. 2 and 3.
O designates an elastic packing placed within the cylinder and upon which the crossbar bears, the rubber tending at all times to prevent jar or rattle of the thill-iron with the draw-bar, the object of reducing the hearing portion of the cross-bar being to allow the same to more fully embed within the rubber for this purpose.
In operation the cylinder, being properly packed with rubber or analogous elastic substance, is placed within the circular opening in the draw-iron. The slots G and II are caused to register when the cross-bar of the thill-iron is caused to enter the said slots by raising the thills to a sufficient incline, and the bar is pressed upon the rubber sufliciently to allow the same to pass within the interior diameter of the cylinder, and the thills are allowed to assume a normal position, thereby revolving the cylinder within the draw-iron and locking the two coupling sections together. \Vhile the bifurcated arms M embrace the draw-iron and hold the cylinder in place to prevent any rattle being caused by the ends of the cylinder striking the same, the lug F projects into a circumferential groove F, formed on the inner periphery of the circular opening in the draw-iron, thereby preventing lateral movement.
It will be seen that the parts when coupled are compact and neat in appearance, and that all rattle of the parts is effectually prevented, and that the coupling or uncoupling of the same can be easily and quickly accomplished.
What I claim is 1. In a thill-coupling, the combination,with a draw-iron formed with a transverse circular recess having a longitudinal slot communicating therewith and provided with a circumferential groove within the side of said recess, of a cylinder working in said recess and formed with a recess corresponding in width to the slot of the dra\\'iron, said cylinder be ing provided with a lug upon its exterior adapted to enter the circumferential groove in the circular recess, and a thill-iron having a cross-bar adapted to rest Within the recess of the cylinder, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a thill-coupling, the combinationpvith a draw-iron formed with a transverse circular recess having a longitudinal slot opening into the same, said recess being provided with a circumferential groove Within the sides of the same, of a cylinder working in said recess and formed with a recess corresponding in width to the slot in the draw-iron, and provided on its exterior with a lug adapted to engage the circumferential groove of the draw-iron, a thill-iron having a cross-bar reduced on its front side, said cross-bar adapted to be inserted within the recess of the cylinder, and an elastic packing placed between said cross bar and the bottom of the recess, substantially as and for the purpose described.
