GAS AND AIR MIXER AND GOVERNOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,418, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed March 19, 1888.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. HovEY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas and Air Mixers and Governors, of which the following is a specification.
This invention in gas and air mixing and governing apparatus is in the nature of an improvement on Letters Patent of the United States granted to me March 13, 1883, No. 273,813, the principal objects of which are to insure an equilibrium of pressure at the burners or place of consumption, and a combining with the gas or carbureted air of suitable quantities or proportions of atmospheric air; and the invention consists in the construction and combinations of the various parts, all substantially as will hereinafter more fully appear, and be set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which corresponding characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure 1 is a central vertical sect-ion of the apparatus. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof on the line a". 00, Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view of the lower portion of the apparatus in a plane at right angles to that of Fig. 1 and as indicated on the lineg y, Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4 is a per spective view in detail of the valve, to be hereinafter referred to; and Fig. 5 is a transverse section of the valve at one of its screwholes and a side view of one of the valve-eX- panding screws.
In the drawings, A represents a vertical circular chamber closed at its bottom and sides, except as to the entrance of the passages thereto, hereinafter described, and at its top open to and in communication with the chamber of a cylindrical gas-receiver B within the inclosing-case C, said receiver B being open at its lower side an d vertically movable within the case or tank 0, under a suitable gas or air pressure thereon.
From opposite sides of the circular chamber A, through its surrounding body or casting a, are horizontal ports 5 and 6, of suitable Serial No. 267,592. (No model.)
width and height, in communication with which ports 5 and 6, at the outer ends of each, are passages 7 and 8, extending downwardly, substantially as shown, and in communication with the outer ends thereof are respectively a gas-pipe J and an air-pipe 10, to be connected with a suitable carburetor or gas supply and with an air-compressor or other suit able supply, respectively.
From a suitable lower portion of the circular chamber A is an independent passage 12 through the casting, the outer end of which passage 12 is connected with a supply-pipe 13, leading to the burners.
WVithin the circular chamber A is disposed a tubular valve G, open at each end, provided with an axial hub portion 14 and the intermediate supporting arms or spokes 15, and also provided in its side walls with ports 17 and 18. The said valve is secured upon a vertical stem 11, which by its upper end is secured to the vertically-movable gas-receiver B, and the ports 17 and 18 of said valve. are to be disposed in the circumference thereof in such a manner that when the entire width of one of the portssay the one 17-registers with or is opposite the adjacent port 5 in the casing the other valve-port 18 will be turned past or out of a coinciding plane with its re spectively adjacent port 6 in the casing, as seen in Figs. 2 and 3 particularly; but on a proper turning of the valve to partially close said port 5 the said port 6 will be partially opened, or the port 5 might be fully closed and the port 6 fully opened.
The valve-stem II, as shown, is made in two sections 20 and 21, connected by a universal joint 22, so that notwithstanding any lateral play of the gas-receiver B as it rises or falls the valve G, hung therefrom, will not be cramped or bound thereby in its movements along the walls of the casing A.
A radial arm 25 is secured to the lower end of the valve-stem, which is forked at its outer end, as shown at 26, between which forked portions plays a vertical post 28, carried at the outer end of a horizontal arm 29, said arm being secured to a vertical arbor 30, having-a bearing in the bottom of the casing A, and at its outer end provided with a sector-gear 31, with the teeth of which meshes a worm-screw 32, hung in suitable bearings 33,
supported from the bottom of the casing a, and provided for its rotation with ahandwheel 34.
As seen in the drawings, particularly in Figs. 2 and 4, the valve is split by a longitudinal kerf 50 through its one outer side wall and through its hub portion, whereby it is slightly circumferentially elastic. One or more screws 55, having the inner part of their heads tapered, as shown at 56 in Fig. 5, are passed through transverse screw-holes in the hub, which screw-holes have outwardly-flaring ends 57, corresponding with the taper part 56 of the screw-heads. The walls of the valve are also provided with circular apertures 52, through which a screw-driver may be inserted for turning the said screws 55, the action of which by their taper-heads insures an expansion or contraction of the valve to closely fit the casing, as desired.
The operation of the apparatus described is as follows: The valve G is to be turned so as to present its ports 17 and 18 in such relation to the ports 5 and (3 that the desired proportions of gas and air will from their respective supplies and through the passages 7 and 8 and said ports 5 and 17 and (5 and 18 be allowed to enter the chamber A, in which chamber, or in the receiver-chamber B, in communication therewith, the said gas and air will be intermixed. Thence the intermixed gas and air passes downwardly and forward through the outlet-passage 12 to the burners. Should the pressure of the gas or air through the passages described into the chamber A become greater than desired, the receiver B is upwardly moved, carrying the valve upward, so that the length of the portions of its ports 17 18, which are opposite the ports 5 and (5, is diminished, and thus the areas of the inlets of the valve decreased, when, under the consequent reduced pressure, the receiver B descends, causing a widening of the inlet areas, and, as will be easily understood, an equilibrium of pressure will be thus m aintained.
What I claim as my invention is 1. The combination,with acircular vertical casin g providedwith lateral inlet-ports in co mmunication with gas and airsupply conduits, and having an outlet-port leading therefrom, a vertically-movable gas-receiver in communication therewith, and an inclosing-tank, of a valve-stem hung from said movable gas-receiver and vertically movable therewith, and a tubular valve secured thereto, provided in its walls with ports arranged to register with said casing-ports, a forked radial arm secured to said valve-stem, an arbor having a bearing in the bottom of the casing provided at its inner end with a radial arm having a vertical post engaging the said forked arm, and at its outer end provided with a sector-gear, and a worm having hearings on said casing, engaging with said sector, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination, with a circular vertical casin g provided with lateral inlet-p orts in communication with gas and air supply conduits and having an outlet-port leading therefrom, a vertically-movable gas-recei ver in communication therewith, and an inclosing-tank, of a valve-stem made in sections and connected by a universal joint hung from said movable gasreceiver and vertically movable therewith, a tubular valve secured thereto, provided in its walls with ports arranged to register with said casing-ports, a forked radial arm secured to said valve-stem, an arbor having a bearing in the bottom of the casing, provided at its inner end with a radial arm having a vertical post engaging the said forked arm, and at its outer end provided with a sector-gear, and a worm having hearings on said casing engaging with said sector, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
3. In a device for mixing gas and air, the valve herein described, comprising a tubular outer portion provided with ports, an axial hub, and intermediate arms, and having a longitudinal kerf through the outer wall and said hub and provided in said hub with screw-holes with flaring ends, and one or more screws provided inside their heads with taper portions, substantially as and for the purpose described.
4:. In a device for mixing gas and air, the valve herein described, comprising a tubular outer portion provided with ports, an axial hub, and intermediate arms, and having a longitudinal kerf through the outer wall and said hub, and provided in said hub with screw-holes with flaring ends and in its outer wall with one or more apertures in radial alignment with said screw-holes, and one or more screws provided inside their heads with taper portions, substantially as and for the purpose described.
