BOILER Patented Sept. 3, 1889 WITNESSES.- W//%,
ATTORNEYS.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES J. DAVIDSON, or sIo X cITY, IOWA.
BOILER! SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 410,351, dated September 3, 1889.
Application filed May 22,1889. Serial No. 311,699. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES J. DAVIDSON, of Sioux City, in the county of WVoodbury and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Boiler, of which the followin a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to steam-boilers, the object of the invention being to provide for the perfect combustion of all gases generated by the primary combustion that is carried on within the main fire-chamber; and to the end named the invention consists, essentially, of a sectional boiler, the boiler-sections being arranged the one in advance of the other and the flue-area increasing as the sections recede from the fire-box, all as will be hereinafter fully explained, and specifically pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which the figure is a central longitudinal sectional view of my improved sectional boiler.
In carrying out my invention I provide a main boiler 10, of the locomotive type, in which there are arranged fiues 11, which communicate with a second combustion-chamber 12, that is arranged in advance of the second boiler-section 13, said section being provided with a number of fines 14, the combined area of said fiues being in excess of the combined area of the fiues of the main boiler-section, and the fiues 14, leading to a third combustion-chamber 15, which is in communication with a third boiler-section 16, provided with flues 17, the combined area of said flues 17 being in excess of the combined area of the fines 14, and the fines 17 delivering to a fourth combustion-chamber or to astack 20, as represented in the drawings.
Communication between the boiler-sections l0 and 13 is established by means of upper pipes 21 and by means of lower pipes 22 and 22, said pipes 22 and 22 leading to a blowoff pipe 23, which bloweoif pipe is put. in communication with the third boiler-section through a pipe 24. A pipe 25 leads from the upper portion of the third boiler-section to the lower portion of the second boiler-section, and in all of the pipes named I arrange stopcocks or valves, as 26. Beneath the combustion-chambers 12 and 15, .I arrange hollow pedestals 30, which serve as ash-receptacles.
The feed is delivered through a pipe 31,.
which leads to the boiler-section 16-that is, to the boiler-section that is most remote from the first boiler-section and hence to the boilersection where the temperature is the lowest. By increasing the area of the fines as the boiler-sections recede from the firebox I provide for the accommodation of the expanded gases and hence for a more complete combustion. I
In practice the fines 14 and 17 would be arranged to register, whereby the cleaning of said lines would be materially facilitated.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the series of multitubular boiler-sections 10, 13, and 16, the crosssectional area of the second being greater than the first, and the third section greater than the second, theupper pipes 21 and 25, which connect the said sections, the lower pipes 22 22 24 and blow-oit pipe 23, connected, as specified, and the feed-pipe 31, which leads to the third or largestboiler-section, as shown and described.
CHARLES J. DAVIDSON.
