UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES S. BEEBE, OF MOLINE, ILLINOIS.
VEHICLE-SEAT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,445, dated August 20, 1889. Application filed July l, 1889. Serial No. 316,221. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. BEEBE, of Moline, in the countyof Rock Island, and in the State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vehicle- Seats; and I'do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
My invention relates to vehicle-seats which are particularly designed for sulkies and oth er light wagons, and will be fully described hereinafter.
In the drawings, Figure l is a plan View, partly broken. Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a detail of a modification.
A is the front rail of `my improved seat, and B the back rail. To give the proper elevation and incline to the back rail an inclined re-enforce O may be interposed between its ends and the front rail and the parts secured together by screws or bolts and glue, as usual. To form the seat the sides of rail B are connected with each other by strips D, that are upwardly curved at their ends and screwed or bolted to the sides of the rail B,preferably in groove ct, in which the ends of stripsD are fitted. Other strips E, which are bellied, as shown, extend from the front rail A to the back portion of rail B, crossing strips D, and the rear ends of these strips E are preferably secured to the rail B in groove a; and the front end in a horizontal groove inv the front rail and, if desired, the strips may be scoured 1.o-
get-her at their crossingpoints, as at g, or the strips may be interwoven with each other, as in Fig. 4.
My improved seat has the advantage over others in being very light, strong, an d durable, as well as cheap, and may be made ot either wood or metal.
I do not propose to conline myself to the exact form or proportions shown in the draw ings, or to the method shown of securing the ends of the strips to the rails A and I3, as these may be varied indefinitely without departing from the spirit of my invention; but
`What I do claim as new, and desire t0 secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination, with the back rail, of a front rail to which the ends of the back rail are secured, and strips extended from the front to the back rail, and other strips extending from one side to the othero'f the back rail and crossing the iirst-named strips substantially -in the presence of two witnesses.
