end, an L-shaped lever C, pivoted to the said UNITED Y STATES JOSHUA SIMEON GUYTON,
PATENT OFFICE.
OF GRANGER, MISSOURI.
WIRE-TIGHTENER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No.409,322, dated August 20, 18819.
Application filed June 19, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSHUA SIMEON GUYToN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Granger, in the county of Scotland and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Wire-Tightener, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wire-tighteners; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of my improved device, showing it arranged to engage a wire. Fig. 2 is a side view of the same with a part in vertical section.
In carrying out my invention I employ a main bar A, having a ferrule or ring B at one main bar, and a link I), having a hook E at one end, the said link being pivoted to the lever O and its hook playing through the ferrule B. The lever C is pivoted to the main bar, so that its longer arm Flies substantially parallel with the said main bar, while its shorter arm G is at right angles to it.
In practice the device is arranged at right angles to the fence-wire, and the longer arm of the lever O is moved away from the main bar, so as to project the link D through the ferrule B and engage the hook E over the fencewire. The lever is then moved toward the main bar, thereby withdrawing the link and pulling the fence-wire into the ferrule. The
shorter arm of the lever then grasped and Serial No.3l4,836. (N0 model.)
the device rotated, so as to form a twisted loop in the wire and thereby tighten the same.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that I have provided an extremely simple and efficient device by which the wire may be tightened after it has slackened, and its advantages are thought to be obvious.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,
1. A wire-tightener consisting of a main bar provided with a ring or ferrule at its end, a link sliding through said ring and provided with a hook adapted to engage the wire, and a lever pivoted to the main bar and the link, as set forth.
2. A wire-tightener consisting of a main bar having a ring at one end, an L-shaped lever pivoted to said main bar, and a link pivoted at one end to the lever, moving through the ring and provided with a hook at its free end adapted to engage the wire, as set forth.
3. A wire-tightener consisting, essentially, of two levers hinged together, one of said levers being provided with a longit-udinally-disposed ring at its end, and the other one carrying a hook adapted to slide longitudinally through said ring, as set forth.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSHUA SIMEON GUYTON.
