UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE;
IVILLIAM S. SI-IARPNEOK, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
ANTI-FRICTION JOURNAL-lBOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 409,307, dated August 20, 1889.
Application filed November 22, 1888. Serial No. 291,573. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
. Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. SHARPNECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anti-Friction J ournal-Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to an improvement more particularly designed to be used in connection with the form of journal-box shown in my application Serial No. 284,472, filed September 3, 1888, but may be used with other styles of journal-boxes.
It consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combination of parts hereinafter more particularly described, and then definitely pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a vertical central longitudinal section of my improvement, and Fig. 2 an end view of the same.
Referring now to the details of the drawings, A represents an axle preferably .provided with a hardened-steel ring B, but it may be of any suitable material or construction.
0 is a bar or spider secured to the case of the box, (not shown,) through which passes a bolt D of peculiar form, preferably having an opening for a key, and having at one end a threaded shank d and at the other a large head (1', near which is a reduced portion d". The threaded end is provided with a nut E and jam-nut E, and the headed end is inclosed by a cup F, having an aperture f 0011- siderably larger than the reduced portion of the bolt. In the periphery of this cup is a set-screw G, provided with a jam nut g, which secures in the cup a hardened-steel guide or ring II, having an inwardly-turned flange h. Between this ring II and the head (1' of the bolt D is a disk of hardened steel I, said ring and disk forming a kind of cup, in which are set anti-friction balls, preferably three, as shown by Fig. 2, which balls receive the end-thrust of the hardened-steel ring B or axle A, and may therefore be called the end bearing.
I have found great difliculty heretofore in adjusting the bearing concentric to the center of the axle; but by the present invention this is effectually overcome, for by loosening the nuts E E and the set-screw G the cup E and ring H can be readily moved and adjusted,'so that by moving the ring II until it slips over the end of the ring 13 the cup F is adjusted concentric with the axle, and then by tightening the nuts E E said cup F is securely held in the proper position. The ring II is then drawn back in the cup by hand and held in place by the set-screw G.
It will thus be seen that the ring 11 can be readily adjusted and secured perfectly concentric with the axle, and that its adjustment can at any time be readily changed to suit any change that may occur from wear or other derangement, whereby the end bearing can be always easily adjusted concentric with the center of the journal.
\Vhat I claim as new is 1. The combination, with a journal, of a rolling end bearing therefor, a cup having a lateral adjustment transversely of the journal, and a movable guide or ring held by said cup and receiving said rolling end bearing, substantially as described.
2. The combination, with a journal, of a cup havinga lateral adjustment transversely of the journal, a movable guide or ring held by said cup, and a ball held in the guide, substantially as described.
3. The combination, with a journal, of a cup having a lateral adjustment transversely of the journal, a movable guide or ring and disk held in said cup, and means, as the bolt D and nut E, for adjusting said cup, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses, this 20th day of November, 1888.
WVILLIAM S. SHARPNEOK.
