CAR-AXLE BOX.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 373,490, dated November 22, 1887.
Application filed February 21, 1887.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, WILLIAM S. SHARP- NECK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Colorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Anti Friction Journal-Boxes, of which the following is a specificatiomreference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 represents aside elevation of a journal-box constructed according to my in1- provement; Fig. 2, a central vertical longitudinal section, and Fig. 3 a vertical section through the line x x in Fig. 2.
This improvement relates to that class of anti-friction journal-boxes in which are employed a series of rollers set in a ring to keep them at a proper distance from each other, and the invention consists in the peculiar construction, arrangement, and combinations of parts, hereinafter more particularly described, and then definitely pointed out in the claims.
Referring, now, to the details of construction, A indicates a casting screwed to the truss-bars B by bolts and nuts C c, and having an overhanging arm, D, which supports a disk, E, having a groove, e, in which rolls a ball, F. This disk is held in place by a bolt, G, nut g, and jam-nut g, for a purpose hereinafter described.
H indicates the journal, provided with a steel thrust-collar, I, secured thereto by a bolt, z', or otherwise,which collar bears against the ball F, running in the groove e, to take oii end friction.
Around the journal is set a series of roll ers, K, the shape of which is plainly seen in Fig. 2, each having a reduced portion, 7c,with a bead, k', thereon. These rollers run in a box, L, formed of two castings, Z Z', secured together by bolts M and nuts m. The upper part, Z, of the box has a shallow groove, ZY, in which are arranged three rollers, N, on which rests the casting A, before referred to, which has a shallow groove on its under side similar to that in the top of the casting Z. Each of these rollers has one or more pins, n, (see Fig. 3,) the ends of which loosely play in Serial No. 228,374. (No model.)
holes in the casting A and box L, which act as cogs to keep the rollers in their proper position. The pins arc also shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2.
'Io keep the rollers K in their proper position with respect to each other, a ring, O, is employed, of gun or other suitable metal, working in a recess in the box L, and provided with a series of small boxes, o, which are to be fitted with any suitable anti-fric tion material, but preferably with a mixture of sulphur, pulverized mica, and plumbago, for which I am about to make application for a patent, and which is not therefore claimed herein.
It will be seen that by this construction a box is made that is not only provided with anti-friction rollers around the axle, but the end-thrust is lessened by the ball F, and the box and journal will run easily and smoothly endwise in the casting A.
It will be readily seen that the end motion of the axle can be readily adjusted by inserting packing between the disk E and the end of the arm D, which can be done by backing oft' the nuts g g until the requisite space for the packing between the arm D and disk E is obtained.
Having now described what I consider the preferable way of carrying out my improvement, but without limiting myself to the exact construction shown, what I claim as new 1sl. The combination, with a journal and a series of rollers, of the ring O, provided with a series of boxes, o, filled with anti-friction material, substantially as described.
2. The combination of a journal-box having an annular recess and a ring, O, revolving in said recess, provided with a groove, with a series of rollers having beads is', working in the groove ofthe ring O, substantially as described.
3. The combination, in a journal-box provided with acasting, A, having arm D, of the ball F, the adjustable disk E, having groove e, and an adjusting bolt and nuts, as Gg, substantially as described.
4. The combination, with a j ournal-box and its supports, of the rollers N, arranged transversely of t-he journal, substantially as described.
5. The combination, with ajournal, of the casting A, arm D, disk E, ball F, box L, rollers N, ring O, and rollers K, running in said ring, substantially as shown and de scribed.
