UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
JAMES H. IVEBB, OF CLINTON, ARKANSAS.'
MONUMEN'T'.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,776, dated August 13, 1889.
Application filed January 8, 1889.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES H. VEBB, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clinton, in the county of Van Buren and State of Arkansas, have invented new and useful Improvements in Monuments, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in monuments and headstones for graves; and it consists in certain novel features hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis an elevation of a monument constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a view showing the several parts in elevation and detached. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 0c x of Fig. l.
Referring to the drawings by letter, A A designate posts or standards of any suitable material and of any desired size, which are adapted to be secured in the ground at the proper distance apart. At an intermediate point of the height of these standards I provide the same with the lateral studs or stops B, which support the l'ower sill when all the parts are arranged together.
C D designate the upper and lower sills, which are provided at their ends with the metallic loops E, which are adapted to t over the posts or standards and thereby hold the sills thereto. The loops on the lower sill contact with the stops B on the standards, and thereby limit the downward movement of the said sill and support the same. The sills are provided in their opposing sides with the sockets F, which receive tenons G at the The said guiderails H are arranged vertically between the sills and are provided in their opposing faces with the grooves I, which receive the edges of the panel'J, containing the inscription.
On the upper side of the upper sill I secure the cap-piece K. This cap-piece is used to give a iinished appearance to the monument and may be ornamented in any desired manner. It Inay be permanently secured to the sill or formed integral therewith; but I prefer to make it separate therefrom..
Serial No. 295,740. (No model.)
From the foregoing description it will be seen that Ifhave provided a monument in which the parts can be readily detached from each other, so as to economize room in packing for transportation and to render the device convenient for handling.
In putting the device together the standards are set up at the proper points, the lower sill is then slipped down between the standards and supported by the studs thereon, the guide-rails H are then set up on the said sill and the panel slipped down between the said rails, after which the upper sill and cap-piece are placed in position over the panel and guide-rails, as will be readily understood.
My monument can be made of any suitable material and Inay be ornamented to any desired degree. When the parts are fitted together, it has the same appearance as the monuments now cut out of stone, and its advantages are thought to be obvious.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The improved monument herein described and shown, consisting of the standards having the studs B,'the sill D, having the sockets F in its upper side and provided at its .ends with theloops E, encircling the standards and resting on the studs B, the guide-rails having tenons at their ends engaging the sockets F, and having grooves in their inner opposing faces, the panel having its side edges engaging said grooves and its lower edge resting on the sill D, the sill O, resting on the upper edge of the panel and having sockets in its lower side engaging the tenons at the upper ends of the guide-rails and provided at its ends with loops encircling the standards, and the cap-piece K, secured on the upper side of the sill C, as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed luy-'signature in presence of two witnesses.
