JESSE ORR, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO ORR, PAINTER 8t (30., OF SAME PLACE.
' DOOR FOR STOVE-OVENS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,191, dated July 30, 1889. Application filed September 21, 1888- Serial No. 285,976. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JESSE ORR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doors for Stove-Ovens; and I do'declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
A limited number of cooking stoves and ranges have heretofore been provided with oven-doors designed to admit cold air into the oven, it being considered advantageous to the flavor of the article's being cooked and a source of economy in reducing the loss in weight due to the cooking process; and ovens have also been constructed with a horizontal partition adapted to cause air admitted at the bottom of the door to circulate through the even before passing out at the top. Deflectorplates have also been placed in the front of air-openings in oven-doors.
The object of my invention is to furnish an oven-door in which the functions of the deflector-plate and of the horizontal partition will. be combined in a simple and economical construction, and, further, to admit the fresh air, not at the bottom of the door, but higher up, compelling it to pass downward before entering the oven, being thus heated en route by contact with both the partition and deflector-plate.
Figure 1 is an outside view of an oven-door involving my invention, one corner .being broken away to show the def] ector-plate more clearly. The registers are represented as open. Fig. 2 is avertical section through on y of Fig. 1.
A represents the door, which is cast with a horizontal rib or partition 13 and with openings O and D below and above said partition. A plate E is secured by screw-bolts M to the latter, and is thus held at some distance from the main-door plate A, leaving a chamber above and below said partition communicating with the respective openings D and C.
The plate E may be brought close to the side walls of the door, but spaces N and ]P are left between the plate and the top and bottom walls, so that when the door is closed against the side plate K of the stove there will be a communicating passage-way from the lower openings 0 into the lower part of the oven and from the upper part of the same to the upper outlets D,the natural course of the air being to pass in at the bottom and out at the top.
H and L represent, respectively, the oventop and oven-bottom.
F and G are independent slides adapted" to regulate the size of the openings D and O,
forming top and bottom registers for the withdrawal and admission of air from and to the oven.
The cold air admitted at G strikes against the deflector-plate E, which imparts a portion of its heat to it as it is carried around it and passes into the even through the space P. The hot air at the top of the oven is at the same time drawn out through the upper space N and openings D, the amount of circulation being under complete control by means of the top and bottom registers, and no matter how much fresh air is admitted its temperature is considerably raised before it reaches the oven.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is An ovendoor constructed with upper and lower chambers separated by a horizontal solid partition, substantially as described, the
lower chamber having air-inlet openings (1 in its outer wall immediately below said partition, and the upper chamber having similar outlet-openings D, the inner Wall of said chambers being formed by a solid Vertical de- Hector-plate E,arranged to leave top and bot- JESSE ORR.
