CHARLES XV. GLIDDEN, OF LYNN, MASSACHUSETTS.
NAIL FOR BOOTS OR SHOES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 408,173, dated July 30, 1889.
Application filed August 20, 1888. Serial No. 283,196. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES V. GLIDDEN, of Lynn, county of Essex, State of Massachusetts, have invented an improvement in Nails for Boots, Shoes, &c., of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like letters 011 the drawings representing like parts.
This invention has for its object the production of an improved nail, it having a tapering clinching-point.
My invention consists, essentially, in a cut nail, ithaving a bevel point extended from one to its opposite edge, whereby the nail is made to clinch in the direction of its width.
Figure 1 represents a piece of nail-plate of uniform thickness, it being marked to show the lines in which it will be cut to form nails. Fig. 2 shows a nail separated from the plate, and Fig. 3 shows the end of the head of the nail.
In accordance with my invention'a plate of metal a, of uniform thickness and of a width corresponding with the length of the nail to be made, is subjected to the action of dies, which cut the same into nails on the lines shown in Fig. l, forming without Waste nails of substantially uniform. thickness, but having broad oblong heads 2 and points 3, which taper from one to the opposite straight edge 4L and 6 of the nail, such a point,. the
apex of which is located at one side of the longitudinal center of the nail, causing the nail to always bend or clinch in the direction of the width of the nail and in the same direction.
One edge 6 of the nail, from the head to the commencement of the taper for the point, is preferably substantially straight, and the opposite edge 4: of the nail, from the base of the tapering head of the nail to the apex of the point, is also, preferably, straight to its opposite edge down to the spot 5, the commencement of the incline to form the bevel point.
It will be seen that the taper 7, forming one side of the head, is at the edge of the slugging heels of boots or shoes and to other work where a light nail or brad is applicable.
The nail herein shown may be produced at the minimum of cost for stock and labor.
I claim- The herein-described out nail, it comprehending a metal body of uniform thickness from end to end, including the fiat head and point, the said body being tapered outwardly at one end, as at 7, along one edge thereof, to form a head, and being tapered inwardly, as at 8, near its opposite end along one edge to form a point, all substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
