DEVICE FOR OPERATING ELEVATOR-HATCHWAYS.

Be it known that we, IVILLIAM BARDSLEY and \VARREN K. OROFFORD, citizens of the United States, and the said IVILLIAM BARDS- LEY being a resident of Kearney Township,
in the State of New Jersey, and the said VAR- REN K. CROFFORD being a resident of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and to useful Improvements in Freight and Passenger Elevators, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in elevator-hatchways; and it consists in novel mechanism, hereinafter described, whereby the hatchway-doors at the different floors of the building may be automatically opened and closed in succession during the ascent and descent of the elevator platform or carriage. Each of the doors is furnished with its own independent operating mechanism, which is actuated by the elevator platform or carriage during its movement.
The invention will be understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is the side elevation of an elevator-shaft provided with the mechanism sought to be protected hereby, the hat-ehway-doors being illustrated in section. and the elevatorcarriage being shown as though ascending through one of the doorways. Fig. 2 is also a side elevation of the elevator-shaft, but 5 taken from a difierent point of observation, the elevator-carriage in this view being shown in position at one of the floors of the building and the hatchway-door for this door being shown entirely open; and Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the dotted line Y Y of Fig. 2.
In the drawings, A B designate, respectively, the vertical guides for the elevatoncar riage O. The guides A B and carriage C are of the usual well-known construction, the car- 45 riage, however, being provided on one side of its upper surface with a cam D, which during the ascent of the carriage comes into contact with and opens the hatchway-doors, lettered E F, respectively, as indicated in Fig. 1. The cam D will be of such configuration as to insure the gradual opening of the doors during the ascent and the gradual closing of the same during the descent of the carriage C.
Upon the side of the standard A ishinged the bracket. G, as indicated more clearly in Fig. 2, which bracket carries at its upper end the outwardly-extending arm having an upwardly-extending twisted bar I, and has at its lower end the pivoted link L, the upper end of the bar I being pivotally secured in a bear- 6o ing-block J. In the drawings the arm H and twisted bar I are illustrated as being a single piece of metal, and the bracket G as being an independent piece of metal; but, if desired, said parts may all be formed. in one piece. To the lower end of the bracket G is pivoted one end of the link L, as above described,the other end of the same being retained by and adapted to have a sliding movement on the guide-rod M, rigidly affixed to the hatchway- 7o door, as illustrated in the drawings. The doors E F are hinged in the usual manner, and are slotted to permitthe passage through them of the elevator-rope N.
Upon the free end of the doors E F are provided the spring-plates P, having an inclined face, as shown, whereby during the descent of the elevator-carriage the lower edge of same coming into contact with said inclined surface may operate to move the door outward against the wall inorder to insure the unobstructed passage downward of the carriage. During the ascent of the elevatorcarriage the doors E F are in succession opened or moved upward, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1 and full lines in Figs. 2 and 3, and after the carriage passes each fioor of the building the said doors close, receiving aslight impetus downward from the contact of the spring-plates P with the wall of 0 the elevator-shaft. During the descent of the elevator-carriage the edge of the same riding downward against the edge of the twisted bar I will operate to turn said bar outward, and with it the arm H and bracket G, 9 5
the latter turning on its hinges Q, and operating through the pivoted link L and guiderod M to open the hatchway-door; hence prior to the elevator-carriage reaching the hatchway-door the latter will have been ICO opened by the pivotal movement of the brackets G, arms H, and twisted bar I, operating through the link L and rod M, and the carriage will thus be permitted to make its descent without obstruction. After the elevator-carriage has passed from contact with the twisted bar I the weight of the door will cause it to close upon the cam Dv and reverse the movement of the bracket G, arm. H, and twisted bar I, the door gradually closing of its own weight as the carriage descends. The carriage O automatically opens each door during its descent in the manner above described, and said doors close by gravity in succession as the carriage passes through the different floors of the building. During the ascent of the elevator-carriage the 0am I) opens the doors E F in succession, as above described, and each door while being opened causes the lower end of the link L to slide outward on the guide-rod M, and this rotary movement of the link L operates to turn the bracket G and twisted bar I outward horizontally in the arc of a circle. The bracket G- and twisted bar I remain in their outward position while the door is open, and after the elevator-carriage passes through the floor and is leaving the door it will come into contact with and ride along the edge of the twisted bar I, thereby preventing said bar from reassuming its former inward position exceptbya gradual movement governed by the inclination of the edge against which the elevator-carriage moves, the edge of the bar I thus acting as a cam governing the closing of the hatchwaydoors during the ascent of the elevator-carriage and the opening of said doors during the descent of said carriage. While the carriage is in contact with the bar I the'latter and bracket G are kept in their outward position, and thus, acting through the link L, retain the hatchway-door in an open position. As the carriage on its ascent gradually approaches the upper end of the bar I the said bar is permitted to turn inward and the hatchway-door to close. Upon the descent of the elevatorcarriage the edge of the latter gradually rides down the edge of the twisted bar I and moves the same outward in proportion to the speed of the descent and opens the door.
A plate or shield of metal of any kind may be applied to the elevator carriage or platform at the point where the latter comes into contact with the edge of the twisted bar I for the purpose of preventing the carriage from becoming worn. This shield, however, is a matter which will vary according to the style of the elevator carriage or platform, and its construction or arrangement will rest in the discretion of the manufacturer, and is not, therefore, illustrated.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hatchway-door provided with the spring-plate P, acting both as a cam and as a spring to give the door a slight impetus downward, combined with the twisted bar I, the arm H, the bracket G, and the link L, the latter being pivoted at one end to the bracket G and at the other end having a sliding connection with the door, substantially as set forth.
2. In operating devices for elevator-hatchways, the hinged bracket G, carrying the outwardly-extendin g arm I-I, having an upwardlyextending twisted bar I, and having a link L pivoted to the lower end of said bracket, combined with the guide-rod M, secured upon the hatchway-door and engaging the link L, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
