Description
. UNTTE STATES PATENT QFFICE.
LORENZ WOLF, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
I MPROVEM ENT IN GANG-FLOWS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 40,721, dated November 24, 1863'; antedated November 11, 1863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORENZ WOLF, of the city and county of St. Louis, and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Gang-Blows and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and clear description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, and made to form a part of this specification. p
The nature of this invention relates, first, to a mode of securing the plows to the beam, by means of which the plows may be readily and quickly detached from the beam when required, and also for regulating the depth of the plows in the ground; second and third, to devices for elevating the plows from the ground.
In reference to the accompanying drawings, Figure '1 is a side elevation of my improvement, with all its parts arranged as for use. Fig. 2 is a sectional bottom view, showing especially the rockeriron, which is of peculiar configuration, andis adapted to raise the plows from the ground while the machine is being turned or its direction varied from a straight line. V Fig. 3 is a perspective view representing the standard-box for securing the plows. Fig. 4 isa vertical sectional view, showing'the position of the rocker-iron with reference to the axle. Fig. 5 is a perspective sectional view of the beam and axle, showing also the rockeriron.
A represents the front wheels of the plow, which are provided with a suitable axle, B, thereby affording support to the front end of the beam 0, the rear end of the same being supported by means of a single wheel, D.
f represents the standard-boxes, formed of suitable metal, with sockets f, which. are adapted to receive the standards h of the plows, and with removable slide-plates f, which are intended to work easily in thejaws c of the sockets.
i represents setscrews, which are adapted to work through the plates f and bear against the standards It, thereby securing the plows in their proper position after they may have been adjusted to the desired depth in the ground. By means of this device important difficulties which have hitherto been encountered in the operation of gang plows may be, to a great extent, overcome. For instance, when the plows meet with obstructionssuch as roots, &c.,--(beyond the power of the team used for drawing the machine to overcome,) of
standards readjusted and secured in the boxes,.
all of which will occupy but a brief space of time. The said boxes are' also avery convenient and perfect device for adjusting and securing the plows to the'proper desired depth in the ground, and they will be rigidly secured to the beam 0 in such manner relatively as to insure the proper position of the plows.
1 represents a support resting upon the axle of the wheel D adapted to sustain the rear end of the beam 0. It is formed with a stem, 1, which passes through the journalbox at of beam 0, as shown in Fig. 1.
a is a lever, pivoted upon support 19 at n, and linked to lever 1" at n, its rear end resting upon the top of the stem l. The lever r is pivoted upon support 10 at r, and extends forward in front of the seat 8, so as to be convenient to the driver, who, when necessary, will depress the forward end of lever r, by means of which the front end of lever a and the rear end of beam 0 will be elevated in such manner as to raise the plows free from the ground, so that they may pass over'any ordinary obstruction.
70 represents the rocker-iron, attached firmly to the forward end of the beam 0, and formed to project downward at its rear and front ends,
with its center resting upon the axle B, as shown in Fig. 4, so that as the team drawing the plows may be turned to the right or left the said rocker-iron will ride up on the axle B, elevating thereby the forward end of the beam 0 and raising the plows from the ground without the aid of other devices.
I do not claim that double levers for elevatcombination of the levers 1' n, with reference to the beam 0 and stem or wheel-standard Zof my improved plow, substantially in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth.
3. The use of the rocker-iron 70, formed, constructed, and arranged to operate substantially ifn tllie manner and forthe purposes herein set ort LORENZWOLF. n s.]
