UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARK \V. EVANS, OF PLAIN FIELD, NEIV JERSEY.
WIRE BAND FOR BOXES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,893, dated July 16, 1889.
Application filed October 7, 1887.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARK WV. EVANS, a citizen of the United States, residingat Plainfield, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vire Bands for Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to bea full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to bands for securing boxes, whereby the box is secured by means of the band passing around it.
The object of my invention is to furnish an improved band having at intervals along its length wire staples coiled between the loops of the strand and their sharpened ends turned down between the loops and parallel with the length of the band.
My invention therefore consists of a band for packages of all kinds, having at regular intervals along its length wire staples coiled between the loops of the strand and their sharpened ends turned down between the loops of the strand,to take the place of nails, by which the band is fastened to the box.
I11 the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved band. Fig. 2 is a view of the same, the band being broken away to show the coiled staple; and Fig. 3 is a side view of the staple.
A represents the band for securing boxes, and is made in a continuous piece composed of two or more wires to a, of any suitable thickness, twisted together in any well-known manner, and is wound upon rolls to be cut at any desired length. At regular intervals along its length are short pieces of wire B,
Sen'al No. 251,719. (No model.)
having sharpened ends, which are coiled between the loops of the band A, and have their sharpened points I) I) turned down between the loops of the strand and parallel with the length of the band to form nails or staples of suflicient length to penetrate the box to be secured. 3y coiling the wire between the loops of the band and turning their sharpened ends down parallel with the length of the band, the danger is lessened of having the points bend over upon their body when struck with a hammer, and also prevents their pulling out of the box.
The operation is as follows: \Vhen the box is ready to be secured, the end of the band A is placed upon the box and the staples B struck with a hammer, which drives the sharpened points 1) Z) into the wood of the box, this being continued until all sides of the box are secured, when the band is cut off.
\Vhat I claim is 1. As an article of manufacture, a band for securing packages consisting of strands of wire twisted together, and having at convenient intervals staples of wire coiled between the loops of the band, and their sharpened ends turned down between said loops and parallel wit-l1 the length of the band, substantially as set forth.
2. A band for securing packages, having coiled between its loops at convenient intervals staples of wire, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
