BALANCED SLIDE-VALVE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 406,232, dated July 2, 1889.
Application filed July 3,1888. Serial No. 278,936. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANK D. PATTEN, of Mont-rose, in the county of Lee and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved Balanced Slide-Valve, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention is an improvement upon the balanced slide-valve forming the subject of Patent No. 242,865.
The features of novelty are, first, a flexible connection between the piston Working in a cylinder at top of the steam-chest and the plate or rail carrying the anti-friction wheels or rollers, (on which the valve slides second, fixed journals on which the said rollers are mounted and rotate; third, means for preventing endwise vibration of the plate or rail carrying the rollers.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts-in all the figures.

The steam-cylinder A supports, in the usual manner, the steam-chest B,in which operates the slide-valve C over the ports a, b, and c of the cylinder A. The slide-valve O is connected with the valve-rod D, operated in any suitable manner from the main shaft of the steam-engine.
On top of the slide-valve G are formed the guideways E, supported on the wheels F, mounted to rotate on the plate G, pivotally connected by a bolt G with a piston-rod H, extending upward and carrying a piston I, mounted to travel in a cylinder J, formed on the top of the steam-chest B. This pivotal or loose connection of the rod H with plate G enables the rollers F to accommodate th emselves to the valve movement, and have an equal bearing at all times. The cylinder J is closed at its upper end by a cover K, through which passes the extension pistonrod L, to prevent the piston and its rod from vibrating. The inner open end of the cylinder J opens into the interior of the steamchest B. Below the piston I in the piston-rod H are held the rods N N, extending in opposite directions and carrying on their outer ends the heads 0 O, fitted onto the inner surface of the cylinder J. Nuts P P screw on the rods N to adj ust the latter in order to take up the Wear on the heads 0. The function of these parts (N and O) is to prevent vibratory movement of the piston-rod as the valve D reciprocates.
The general operation is as follows: The slide-valve 0 receives the usual forward and backward sliding motion from the main shaft by any suitable device connected with the valve-rod D, so as to connect the ports a and b alternately with the exhaust-port c. The slide-valve O. in its forward and backward motion travels on the rollers or wheels F, supported by the plate G, held in position by the steam pressing against the under side of the piston I, held to slide in the cylinder J. The area of'the piston J corresponds with the area of the sliding surface of the slide-valve 0, so that the slide-valve C, by means of its guideways E, travels freely on the rollers F. The pressure of thesteam in the steam-chest always holds the piston I in such a relative position that the plate G and its rollers'F support the slide-valve O freely, and the latter is moved forward and backward over its seat on the cylinder A very easily by the means connecting the said slide-valve C with the main shaft of the engine.
The heads 0 of the bolts N held on the piston-rod H serve as a cross-head for the latte,
and in conjunction with the extension pistonrod L prevent all vibration of the piston I, the piston-rod H, and its plate G, so that the valve 0 travels freely on the rollers F of the plate G.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. The combination, with the steam-chest having a cylinder at the top, the slide-valve having the angular guideways E, the pistonrod and piston sliding in said cylinder, of the plate G, which is pivotally connected with said rod, and rollers journaled on the plate, as shown and described, to operate as specified.
2. The combination, with the steam-chest having a cylinder at the top, the piston-rod and plate G, connected with the latter and held against en dWise movement, and the slidevalve having guideways E, of the rollers F F, which are mounted and rotate on journals fixed in said plate, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
3.
